Good morning
« on: October 02, 2018, 09:03:24 AM »

Good morning from a cold but sunny Perth(Scotland.)

I'm 46 years old and haven't had my period for almost a year,I have been having hot flashes day and night also night sweats. I was at my Doctors the other week explaining this to him,he went through everything and explained everything to me. I had my blood pressure taken three times! The doctor told me that I had high blood pressure(That wasn't anything new to me as I have had high blood pressure and high cholesterol before.(Not taken medication for both in a year or so.)

The doctor said that I could have a coil fitted but might not be sutable for HRT because of high BP. Does this mean that if I get my PB under control I could get HRT?   So now I'm at the stage were I have had blood drawn and I am waiting for the results of those.  I don't know what to expect,so any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you all for reading and all the advice.  Margaret.

Hi you can have hrt with high blood pressure. Try taking your blood pressure at home as it could be the stress of being st doctors which put it up . X

Good morning Dotty and thank you for the reply.  I think the doctor will be prescribing the HBP tablets the next time I go and see him to try and get it under control. I'm not sure he will prescribe the HRT untill the BP is under control.

Hi and welcome to MM Freckles1971

At 46 you are young to be oestrogen deficient so some HRT might well be beneficial. High blood pressure needs to be under control though.  I assume you are seeing your weight under control, doing good regular exercise and adjusting your diet to reduce cholesterol ?
Fitting a Mirena could be a good choice but only if you use some oestrogen alongside e.g. Oestrogel or Oestrogen patches.   The Mirena on its own would not be beneficial and might even over thin your uterus and cause problems - very surprised the GP didn't known this!!!???   If you can have medication to keep you blood pressure under control then there should be no reason why you can't have HRT. The Mirena with separate oestrogen is a good non bleed HRT regime.

Afternoon Dancinggirl and thank you for the reply and advice.   My weight has been up and down for a while now,but I'm trying to get it sorted. I was on statins for my cholesterol, but I stopped taking them and I have to see my doctor to get another prescription.   I don't know if I am oestrogen deficient or not,but I'll know by Friday what's going on as I had blood drawn on Monday. I'll also probably have another appointment to see about treatments.

Thank you again.   Margaret.

Do buy a home blood pressure test kit, take it B4 eating at the same time each morning.  You may well have white coat syndrome!! so what is high in the Surgery may be within normal limits at home.  Take a note for 3 weeks of the readings and see.  There are HRTs that can be used as you need protection for heart and bones.

We have threads on everything here, including exercise  ;D and don't miss the threads on vaginal atrophy  :o 4 which you may require treatment regardless of BP!

Browse round.  Make notes.

Hi

Regarding blood pressure if it is persistently high it needs to be brought down by changes in livestyle and/or medication. But blood pressure for me during this year especially (48y, late stage peri likely with very irregular periods, not on HRT (yet)) has been unpredictable at times and gone up and down basically in line with symptoms such as hot flushes (had lots of other symptoms like nausea etc). I could have high blood pressure and then half an hour later it was back to even quite low levels. BP can also be substantially higher when measured at GP. For me in a recent visit it was in "high" range but when taking it back at home after being calm about measuring it again it dropped to pretty good values below 120/80. Reducing caffeine and salt intake and regular exercises can help with lowering BP but your GP should be consulted as well if it is persistenly high. My main experience with peri has been basically that it "messes everything up" including BP and sleep patterns, not great but I have recently improved a bit and wish you all the best.

White Coat Syndrome is common: my husband is the calmest man you will ever find but his BP rises in the Surgery. At home he's normal, whereas on his machine, I am apparently dead  ;D
