Cure for leg and foot cramp at night
« on: May 17, 2018, 05:22:59 AM »

Hi.  Just wanted to pass on something that's worked for me to stop cramp in the feet and calves at night.  For the past 4 nights I've taken a hot water bottle to bed and put my feet on it and the cramp that's been threatening hasn't developed. Might be worth a try for others. x

Morning tiddles I found that helped too and I also put an electric blanket on in winter as that was when my cramp seemed to bother me most on the really cold nights. It can be something simple that triggers it with me like a packet of crisps or a foody item I never know till it hits then I realise oops it was the crisps or the other naughty thing I shouldn't have eaten/drank.xx

Morning Daisydot :-)  It's interesting that you've found it linked certain foods - I will have to start recording what I ate the evenings before cramp threatens to see if there's a pattern. Come to think of it, I have been finishing off a bottle of red wine this week with a glass each night at dinner.  I do hope it's not that !! xx

Tiddles, I agree about the hot water bottle, and it might be lack of potassium. You could try a supplement of 1000 mg magnesium bisglycinate per day. In the meantime, a daily banana might help.

Could be tiddles I darent touch wine at all.if your interested in the diet side of things have a look at the low salicylate diet, google it,it's really eye opening. The list of symptoms attributed to high salicylate foods almost mirrors the list of menopause symptoms I find it really interesting and I learned many years ago that diet plays a huge part in our healths,my son suffered severe asthma attacks ,this is over 30 years ago now, which we linked to what he was eating.mainly boiled eggs and any fizzy drinks like cola,we actually had to revert to a thing called the caveman diet where you had to gradually introduce foods into his diet to build up his immunity,at Two years old can you imagine how hard it was to do this but it worked,he went from 4 hospital stays a week on nebulisers and oxygen to nil he no longer needed an op to put grommets in his ears and he's now a big strapping six footer with his own beautiful little family and very healthy. It definately pays to be aware of how your diet effects you doesent it. Xx

I take magnesium capsules during spells of foot cramping and it really helps

Re:potassium, be very careful taking supplements unless prescribed as high potassium levels have fatal consequences, my dad was prescribed them and we'll never know the correct story but the high levels stopped his kidneys working which resulted in a fatal cardiac arrest xx

Personally I've found night cramps are a sure sign of dehydration plus lack of salts. It gets a bit of a balancing act in the summer between enough & two much fluid intake. Never had the problem in the UK, funny that 😁 but working in 'sunny Spain' has some draw backs.

Hmmmm interesting re the dehydration.  Maybe a banana smoothie last thing at night ?  I have some magnesium tablets I bought a while ago but because cramp is one of those things I only get intermiitently I wasn't very good at taking them but will get them out of the bedside cabinet drawer again and make them part of my nightly routine.  Thanks again for all your tips xxx

SALT Girls SALT - a lack of salt can cause cramps.  Lack of salt almost killed my Aunt.  She was told to reduce her intake by her GP; the fashion of the day, people are eating too much salt;  and of course she believed him.  Even when her hands cramped so badly that she could no longer knit nor open lids off bottles ....... 'but the Doctor told me'.  When the Consultant saw her after she was admitted via A&E he didn't know how she was still upright!

I haven't taken a hottie to bed for years as we have an electric blanket.  :-).  My legs feel cold all the while, but apparently - aren't  ::)

Bananas daily cured my restless legs!
