Update from my Gynae appt
« on: August 31, 2017, 09:25:58 AM »

Hi Ladies
I went to see gynae yesterday to see if she could establish a link between my daily headache, migraines at ovulation and period, and dizziness. To say I am disappointed is an understatement!! I had specifically asked before I booked the appt if she was familiar with hormonal migraine and I was assured that she was. She listened to my story which has been going on since last Sept, she reviewed my blood results and concluded that my symptoms are atypical.....she did a transvaginal ultrasound and assured me that I don't have any cysts, fibroids etc and that was reassuring.
She said the only way to know if my hormones are triggering the headaches is to suppress my cycle - she offered me an injection (can't remember the name of it) which would likely give me hot flushes or she said I could go back on Cerazette to suppress my cycle to see if that helps. I explained that my eyebrows fell out before on Cerazette but she said this may have been coincidental as she hadn't come across that before. She said there isn't anything in my bloods to indicate menopause and that a slightly raised FSH of 12 is not overly concerning and that I am still having a regular cycle albeit some months it's 27 days and others it's 26 days. Also this started last year aged 47 and my Estrogen level of 191 on day 3 is ok with her - she said unless Estrogen is lower than 100 on day 3 she wouldn't consider it as perimenopausal.
So given that I have tried and failed a number of drugs from the neurologist, she suggested I try the Cerazette to see what it does to my symptoms - her thinking is that Cerazette would take my hormones out of the equation by suppressing my cycle.
I guess I am scared that the Cerazette will reduce my Estrogen so low that it will trigger hair loss again and other symptoms associated with low Estrogen. A friend of mine who is aged 49 and was having really heavy periods was put on Cerazette by her GP and he didn't do any Estrogen bloods on her beforehand so perhaps I shouldn't worry too much?
What do you think?

I really understand your frustration. Unfortunately most doctors go 'by the book' and if blood results etc don't tell them anything specific then they usually have a fall back of something like cerrazette.
Basically, peri is still a bit of a mystery and treating the symptoms is a nightmare. Blood tests for hormone levels are notoriously unreliable and most good doctors will take the womans symptoms more into account. Awful headaches, that lasted for days, was one of my first peri symptoms and in fact when I first started HRT my headaches were worse for some time.
I can understand your reluctance to try Cerazette again but maybe it is worth giving it a go to see if it helps.
At least you have the reassurance that all is ok with your womb etc.
Sadly there may not be anything you can do about the headaches at this stage. I am very post meno now ( aged 61) and have tried so many different HRT types but few have solved the headaches. I stopped systemic HRT over a year ago now, still having flushes and sleeping badly - the headaches still floor me and I don't know why or how to stop them. DG x

I would hate to suffer headaches regularly, period pains were bad enough  :'(.  One reason for headaches is when the body is hydrated.  There are food triggers too, i.e. chocolate, cheese ......... and people can have bounce back headaches after taking pain relief for too long.

Hi mav,

I have been thinking about you and your appointment and what a shame!
I think most gps and consultants are pretty clueless and poor really, they just think let's give them ads or contraceptive to get rid of the symptons but in most cares this doesn't help.

If you read all John Stubbs work and information he says to treat people with low dose hrt biodentical in perimenopause and the amount of reading and researching us ladies do, we know more than the gps!

I don't know sometimes what to do for best, my gp again checking all my bloods not hormones just full blood count plus b12 and d levels as they were border line last time....I am seeing meno spec on 12th and have decided to get my coil removed next week, this I think is causing the sore nipples bloatedness and not helping the headaches

Sorry can't advise you on cerazette I have friends on it but they are younger and not having any symptons like what we suffer.
I am just going to get my body to a normal state no contraceptive and then see how I am and hopefully try the biodentical hrt if someone will give to me 😂

Thanks ladies for your replies.....I am literally at my wits end with this.....I am still barely able to function on a daily basis.
The neuro is convinced that it's perimenopause but both the endocrinologist and the gynae say no - the gynae said it's unlikely that peri would cause extreme symptoms ALL of the time - she said she could understand cyclical headaches followed by normal days followed by cyclical headaches....it's unusual to have such extreme symptoms without a break.
So in desperation I have started Cerazette and will just have to wait and see if that changes anything for better or for worse.
I am going back to GP on Monday and will ask him to check things like my cortisol, parathyroid hormones, DHEA, ACTH, ALDOSTERONE and anything else unusual he can think of in case all of this is something like Addison's Disease or some sort of endocrine/parathyroid disorder.
As a backup I have found a GP in Dublin who supposedly specialises in Menopause so if the Cerazette doesn't work out I will go to see her.
Best wishes
