Utrogestan

Can anyone point me to the studies that say Utrogestan can be used vaginally?  I'm particularly interested in the one that talks about them using it once or twice a week on the continent.

I've had some really bad fluid retention and bloating.  It was uncomfortable to sit at my desk and limiting my movement and yoga. I'm slim and have not previously suffered from bloating or fluid. After having a three day break from the Utrogestan and my GP told me to take it every other day the fluid retention went down some. I've now had another couple of days off it and it's totally gone. I was unsure if it was coming from the Utrogestan or the gel, but now know it's the Utrogestan that is the problem. I have to start it again and let the consultant know how I get on. He said it's not proven safe to use vaginally or less than every day, (apart from the 200mg cycle). He said there are other types of progesterone/progestins we could use and stay with the gel.  Can anyone tell me what these are and is there one that is good for bloating?  Has anyone experienced this with Utrogestan and did it settle down?  I've been so upset at how puffy I got and big puffy eyes and neck.  I don't want the Mirena.  Im dreading taking the Utrogestan tonight

May I suggest that you put the product name into the search button to see which threads pop up?

CLKD There are so many posts in Utrogestan and pages and pages of that and the gel. I'm wondering if anyone knows any studies and also recds for other progesterone/progestins. I'll try a pubmed or BMJ search and see what I can find. Someone had recently mentioned about the continental way of taking it

I posted some studies a while back - I expect there have been more since then and I haven't looked recently. I hope this takes you to the page on the thread with the abstracts of the studies posted. If not I will repost for you.

By the way you don't need to tell your doc you are using it vaginally as it is exactly the same capsule if you use as directed. if you want to use it every other day on a conti regime then your consultant should agree to monitor how your womb lining behaves to ensure the dose is sufficient to prevent thickening.

Other progestogens licensed to be used as part of HRT with separate oestrogen are the Mirena and Provera. Some consultants prescribe norethisterone although this is not licensed to be used as such - but would work. Many women expereince sdie effects on this though.

Why not try the vaginal use of Utrogestan for a while and see how you get on? What dose of oestrogen are you taking and how far post-menopause are you?

since I've been taking the utrogestan again, I'm starting to get really bad fluid retention again and bloating.  Skipping a day doesn't help.  I'm not sure if I'm not metabolising it very well and it's really building up.  I also feel so tired with it.  I'm struggling every morning to get out of bed for work.  Has anyone experienced this and does it pass, or should I be asking for a change of progesterone?  I'm using the gel too.

Hi Shortie,

I'm not sure about my e levels.  I use 3 pumps of gel.  I'm new to HRT (3 weeks).  I had femodene pill before.  I have seen the crinone post but the reviews of the 'cottage cheese' have put me off.   I've seen positive posts on femeston, but the gel is fine.  I hate having to try different things and mess my body around.

Shortie, I'm wondering that too.  I'm 50, but both the consultant and my GP are happy to keep me on it for another couple of years. I had a terrible week changing to HRT, probably the drop in estrogen from Femodene and I'm not sure I want to go through that again. I am thinking of moving back to the states and the Femodene pill isn't available there. I took cilest for a few years before Femodene, but started to get some bleeding, so I'm not sure how long it would be before a problem with Femodene popped up.  I had no problems with the progesterone in either of these pills, or with Yasmin.  I can't understand why they don't offer more choices of progesterone. I guess they just think if your going to taken one pill it may as well be a combo. Does the gel work better than oral estradiol?   I had read that HRT is supposed to be superior to the pill.

I've read that about synthetic too Shortie. I wonder if it's because it isn't trying to mimic something p. The identical so are still lab created. I tried maca root a couple of years ago and that made my breasts swell.  I know, I wish the Utrogestan wore off like the gel  :-\. I think I'm probably a bit feast of famine too and I react immediately to hormonal changes, or if they aren't quite right.  I have read that there are more progestins in the pipeline for HRT. Gestodene is one.  Angelique uses the progestin from Yasmin which I found friendly. It's only 1mg, I think, so would need gel too. From Hurdity's post it seems there are not many progesterone/progestins licenced for HRT.  If the weight, bloating and fluid would go away Utrogestan would be OK

I wish Utrogestan came in 50mg and taking it every other day made it worse for me. It's not as bad this time as when I first took it a few weeks ago. I wonder if that's the trick get it completely out of your system and start again and your body recognises it and doesn't react as much. It does somehow seem to affect my digestive system and not in a good way. I don't have doom and gloom, but my energy and mood iare definitely lower, especially in the morning. So that would need to settle. It does make me really tired too, but on the flip side it seems good for my skin and hair.

another strange thing I'm noticing with the utrogestan is my breasts feel really cold.  Like they are chilled from the inside out.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I keep waiting to see if the utrogestan will settle and I'll get used to it, but I'm not too sure it will.
