Utrogestan side effect
« on: April 04, 2017, 03:39:41 PM »

Hi
I am 56 and after trying a few different types of HRT I was prescribed 100mg oral Utrogestan and 1mg Sandrena gel. Both of these I have been prescribed to take every day, no break, which I started end September last year.

I have a history of anxiety and also take anti depressants.

I have been experiencing muzzy headedness, fatigue, and anxiety for the past 3-4 months and am confused as to whether the hrt is causing this. I thought taking Utrogestan every day seemed a lot and queried it but was told to carry on until my hrt clinic appt.

What do others think? Could the Utrogestan be causing my symptoms? In my short, rushed appt when prescribed the dr did say I could use 1 or 2 gel sachets and I've stuck with 1. He didn't say why I might up the dose - would that help?

Any feedback or views would be really appreciated

Thanks

Yes it could be that Utrogestan is causing these symptoms. Progesterone is a sedative and some find these side effects from continuous use ie the fuzzy head, tiredness etc. Anxiety (unless due to life events) is often due to hormonal fluctuations or low oestrogen in particular. Also some progestogens also cause anxiety.

You could try using it vaginally but you might not want to do that continuously, or take it cyclically which would give a withdrawal bleed.

Otherwise you could also try to increase the oestrogen - which might improve the anxiety but not the fatigue and fuzzy head. This might cause some spotting - which may or may not settle - depending on how well you absorb the Utrogestan. This would be less likely when used vaginally.
