Very painful mamogramme
« on: March 05, 2017, 03:32:28 PM »

Hello everyone

I've been sat worrying myself silly about my recent routine mamogramme.
My last one was painful but this one made me cry, extremely painful.
The pain seemed to go right up to my rib cage. I've got carpal tunnel as well
which makes my hands and upper arm throb.

I'm at a very low ebb at the moment after  my mum died recently and I've had flu
which has left me weepy.

Any advice or support would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Dee Dee

 :bighug:

I dread my next mammogram as the last few were painful!  I was told to take Nurofen or Paracetamol B4 going for the exam. and after if necessary.  Pain does NOT mean there's cancer present!

Did your Mum die suddenly?  Maybe contact CRUSE in your area?

My last mammogram was so painful I swore I'd never do one again. In fact I haven't ... but have just started HRT so will have to :( will do the Nurofen /Paracetamol trick, thanks CLKD.
But yes, contact CRUSE if you haven't, Dede. My mother died a year and a half ago and it's still absolutely devastating. CRUSE helped a lot. I wish I'd contacted them earlier, as they do have a waiting list for in home visits. But they also set up weekly Samaritan calls as they have a program with them now too.
I actually wrote a blog about losing my mother, I can pm it to you if you like?

Thank you both for getting back to me so quickly
I was blessed with having my mum around for a very long time...she was 92

She had Alzheimers for a number of years and went into care home twelve
months ago. We were worried about her falling or  getting lost ( she loved going
for a walk ) at home. After looking after her so well at home, she fell at the care nome
and died of bronchial pnumonia.

All this happened several weeks ago now and I was coping well but the mammogram
seems to have brought all the  worry and anxiety back. I'm trying to work
out why the mamogramme was so painful and can't think of another reason
except the obvious one !!

Sadly pneumonia can be the 'old man's friend' ......... if someone is 'healthy' and a ripe old age, it is difficult when Nature takes over.  Don't feel that because your Mum was 'in care' that it was somehow 'your fault' and that, had you kept her at home, she would have still been with you.  I think that would be a 'natural' feeling but we can't gain-say what might have been ........ she needed to be 'safe' and falls can happen anywhere.

I was told by radiographer that small breasts tend to be painful with mammo whereas very large ones aren't and this certainly applies to me as I have large breasts and have had 3 mammos that were no more than slightly uncomfortable.  What I do find is that the position needed has twice caused me a frozen shoulder when the radiographer has yanked my arm over the machine >:(

Pain has no relation to the results at all so please don't think that.

So sorry about your mum, no matter how old you have lost your mum.

Hah well I have large breasts and it was like being tortured  :P I swear that machine was designed by a man. I'm sure some softer curves could have been added to the design  :P

Mine are fairly small and I didn't have any problem with the process.

Just goes to show the boob size is irrelevant ;)

At my last one the actual mammo was fine and I had a senior radiographer because of an heart moniter i have implanted into top of left boob, this lady apparently gets the best images but she was brutal in yanking arms and almost kicking feet into the position she wanted.  This caused busitis in my shoulder!

Thank you all so much for your replies, I really wasn't expecting so many., it definetly helps
sharing my concerns with other people.
My last mamogram was quite painful but not as bad as this one. The pain seemed
to start right under my breast bone. The radiologist said something about arthritis
 causing pain.
I think I'm probably feeling more sensitive right now because of my mums death.....just got to wait for the result now.

Just catching up with this thread. I had mammogram last year, not the most painful one ever, but was lucky that radiographer performed it quickly. One time I was hauled this way & that. Big boobs, small boobs, it's still very painful. Pain passed quickly though.

I agree, its the positioning thats the worst bit, pushed and pulled this way and that, I just couldnt get it right last time but the radiographer was lovely and so patient with me.  I have  big boobs but don't find it too uncomfortable. I am a size 12 below and a 16 on top so I look like I will topple over !!!

I have medium sized boobs (36C) and have had 5 mammograms - all from a mobile unit as I live in a rural area - this visits every 3 years and everyone gets called. None of them have hurt despite having lumpy boobs and mastitis when feeding all my offspring - just a very strong squished feeling as I posted on another thread recently. I'm on HRT so they are more dense than they were just before starting HRT ( late peri-menopause) 10 years ago. Not sure if that makes a difference?

Hope the results are OK Dede!
