yesterday my husband who does alot for me with my dreadful spinal problems had a significant crush injury to his thumb and broke the bone as well.  The hospital drilled holes in his thumb nail ( without pain relief ) to try and let some blood out but it kept clotting so nothing more they could do.  Fracture clinic and orthopod tomorrow and told he would have quite a few sleepless nights!  He is absolute agony even sitting still with thumb above heart and he goes grey if he moves even with painkillers.
So of course I am now having to help him and this morning I bent over to put a sock on him and yes you can guess, agonising pain in back that floored me literally leaving me with sciatica down both legs.  Thankfully up to now it hasn't siezed up as well but I am having to be very very careful every time I move.
Except for tomorrow thankfully the rest of the week is either visitors here or me visiting people to exchange presents plus I have 5 for xmas dinner with 8 by evening. 
Arghhhhh not the week for this to happen
We could do with a carer each at the moment

The thumb thing happened to my relative and is indeed very, very painful. Hope you both improve soon.

Will see what hospital has to say tomorrow. At moment he would happily have his thumb nail removed totally!  Keeping fingers crossed that at the xray tomorrow the bone has not moved as its cracked right through

There's never a good time for something like this to happen countrybumpkin but to have it happen this week.....
Is there a chance someone else could host the Xmas dinner or at least help you by bringing food over?
I know what you mean about it never rains but it pours, it's one long trial at times isn't it? Keeping my fingers crossed that the bone hasn't moved .

CLKD I told him about your suggestion of frozen peas and he literally ran away or should I say shuffled saying " don't touch it whatever you do"    He literally cannot bear the lightest of touches.  HE also says any change in temp makes it even more painful as well.  I can terrorise him with a bag of peas

Big hugs are always welcome.

Christmas Dinner with me is always marks and spencers so its a case of peeling the cover off and shoving in the oven and the people coming will be happy to help on the day.

Maybe up the pain relief for 24 hours?  ……. and that bag of peas might be useful ;-)

Improvement overnight as long as he does not rush around. the thumb and nail are not spectacular black and this has obviously lowered the pain level. He says the sledgehammer has changed to a crowbar

Oh my goodness Countrybumpkin, your poor husband, and poor you too.  That sounds so painful.  I hope he's a bit better today and the appointment went ok.  I know what you mean about this week of all weeks, I consider myself to be very fortunate as Im rarely ill, hubby is the same but this past few days neither of us have felt 100%.  I hurt my back last week, then this week I have a sore throat and cough and today a migraine !  I only get those about once every two years and of course had to be this week . Hubby has done his back in and is doped to the eyes with analgesia and muscle relaxants .  Thankfully today and tomorrow are quiet days, and hopefully by Wednesday when we are on childminding duties we will feel a bit better.  Have ten of us on the big day plus two little ones but Ive delegated this year and they will all be leaving again after dinner so we will have the evening to recover.  I love the bones of them all, but all together with a bit of sibling rivalry thrown in can be " fraught"   Sorry didn't mean to highjack your thread !

Evelyn, you haven't hijacked my thread at all.  In the nicest possible way I am glad its not just me this week!
The fracture clinic was on time and quick, took longer to find a parking space. the ortho Dr spent longer asking questions about our railway and steam engines than his thumb  
He was given choice of plaster to wrist for 6 weeks or a splint for 6 weeks so of course he chose the splint, then they found their biggest splint wasn't big enough but Dr said that with the swelling as it is he can't bend his thumb anyway but as soon as splint fits to wear it for next 6 weeks and no gripping for 6 weeks with the thumb either. Husband winced at the mere thought of putting pressure on his thumb.

Country bumpkin, I so feel for your hubby. On th 9th December I had an operation on my thumb and I know what the pain that I have experienced has been awful and its in a splint.

Hope his thumb improves and your back does too. I am lucky because my Christmas dinner will be cooked for me as there is no way I could do it this year although I love doing it.
