Desperately worried about this ...
« on: December 11, 2016, 05:31:06 PM »

I inadvertently posted about this last week on the 'other health matters' board instead of this one and had two very reassuring replies.

However, fast forward and I am still having these feelings of period cramp - you know that dull dragging ache low down.

I simply can't understand what is going on - I had a subtotal hysterectomy in 2003 and have been menopausal since about 2007.

When I put my symptoms into Google it is simply terrifying :'(

could it be IBS ? X
What is subtotal ? I always think it gets confusing

I was told mine was total because I had uterus and cervix taken x

Subtotal is retained cervix and ovaries because they were all ok.

Half of me thinks I am being really stupid in worrying, but the other half can't help it and just stresses out.

I am sure that worrying about it magnifies the pain :(

No, I have never had any IBS symptoms.

Have you been seen by GP ? If not I think you should so you get answers

I used to get period-like pains after my hysterectomy and they told me it was IBS, I'd never had it before the op, these days it isn't that bad just presents itself in other ways (under left rib, bloating and constipation)

Always best to get it checked x

Thank you, that is what my OH says, but then I worry about them finding something serious (which I know sounds totally crazy :()

If they did find something serious (which chances are it's something treatable and not serious) then at least you've gone early and can get it sorted

Leaving things and suffering won't do you any favours so make that appointment! X

Please go and get checked out- it may be something or nothing but if it is something, the earlier they find it the sooner they can sort it. Your GP can easily perform a quick pelvic examination and refer you for relevant scans if necessary. It has to be better to get it sorted and/or put your mind at rest- it's not like you aren't already worrying yourself sick over this xx

Thank you all so much.  I know that it the way to go, just so scary.

I have had these feelings of period pain/cramping before, but they have never been so intense or lasted for so long.

Will try and get an appointment - that in itself is very stressful :(

Yes can be so hard just to get to see a doc now, but honestly you'll feel better once you know what you're dealing with

After my hysterectomy I also had really sharp pains up into the vaginal canal, I couldn't walk when they were happening and they said that was IBS too, they've decreased in frequency loads over the years x

I had a total hysterectomy 3 years ago (everything taken other than ovaries) since then I've had 2 other surgeries. I still sometimes get period type pains especially when I've been on my feet all day. I also still get swelling. It could be some adhesions?
I would ask your GP, I'm sure they could put your mind at rest.

IBS is nowt like period pains!  The body has a lot of nerve endings down there so it may well be irritation which causes muscles to spasm.

Are you constipated due to slow bowel transit?

Give your GP a ring and get an appt.?

Sorry! I disagree with you.  You only have to google if it can feel like period pains and you get a lot of info (I just did this as your post got me 2nd guessing their diagnosis all those years ago)

IBS can feel different person to person

Yep IBS can feel different for each of us, however: having had very painful periods for over 12 years followed by IBS for years++ it never felt the same for me ……  sometimes people aren't able to describe their various pains.  It is also a different set of muscles although in the same area and IBS and period pains are caused by different issues.

Also, if someone didn't have IBS B4 surgery why would they get it after?    There are a lot of muscles in that area and a lot of heaving and shoving during the operation …….. internal bruising ……….

It did feel the same for me (like you I suffered heavy painful periods) although mine shifted to this internal canal sharp pain too.

I don't know the answers but after hysterectomy things can move into the space surely ?

I can categorically say I never had IBS before my surgery but can it be started by the hysterectomy?

It flared awful during my divorce 4 years after the surgery too and it's been on and off since, but definitely better in the last couple of years
