Blood test results - hormone levels - what do they mean?
« on: December 08, 2016, 10:51:45 AM »

Hi ladies

I was wondering could anyone shed some light on my blood test results from a few days ago:

Testos 0.5 (0.3-1.7)
TSH: 1.18 (0.27-4.2)
FSH: 7.0
LH: 18.1
Oestradiol: 307

What are good levels of oestradiol when on HRT? Testosterone looks a bit low?

Just curious!

Dear Santy, I would like a decent hormone profile for Christmas. I've been a good girl apart from forgetting things regularly and putting the dirty laundry in the drier

Hi cjmca

I am not an expert on these.... but when in your cycle were they taken? Also remind us of where you are in menopause - peri or post?

Testosterone testing is unreliable because our readings are at the lower end of the scale for testing which - from what I was told by gynae - is designed for the higher levels that men have. She told me it was better to go on symptoms - low libido in particular even when on adequate HRT and especially when taken cyclically (ie not prog all the time), and if not taking other meds like ADs which can lower libido - is the best indication.

TSH looks good!

FSH also indicates peri-menopause or taking oestrogen HRT which depresses FSH - so probably no point in testing this when on HRT -  not sure?

LH - I really don't know about this but that level is not extreme:

From GP Notebook:

LH levels
•   0.15 pre-pubertal
•   0.5-9 males
•   0.5-14.5 females follicular and luteal phase
•   16-84 at ovulation
•   17-75 postmenopausal

(Ref ranges vary between labs)

Estradiol - is a healthy level if you are post-menopausal and your levels are not varying. If still peri then depends where in cycle it was taken - this is not high for pre-ovulatory peak! If yuou are feeling well - without flushes and sweats and have sufficient energy etc then this indicates that oestrogen level is fine. I have read ( sorry can't find where) that HRT aims to average out the estradiol levels of the avergae menstrual cycle so in the region of 300 ish pmol/l give or take 50 pmol/l or so! However some women need more than this to feel OK, and some are fine on less - like me!

What does your doc say?

Does that help? Others may offer a different viewpoint!

Thanks ladies! I have Premature Ovarian Failure since my 20s and no hormone intervention until this year (long story!) My last period was aged 20 I think, now 34.  Off to see Nick Panay on Monday, interested to see what he says about it all, and praying my bladder doesn't decide to explode at 30,000ft (flying from Dublin to London)  :o

Aw bless you !

I hope you get help with dr ? Prof? Panay

I can't advise as my ovarian failure at 32 was because it seems the ovaries' blood supply was severed/reduced during my hysterectomy and within months I was suffering menopause symptoms so have taken oestrogen ever since (I'm now 50)

Hi Annie

Oh that's a tough one too! Do you mind me asking how you've got on with the HRT over the years?

I was great from age 32 to 45 on hrt so much so I honestly never ever thought about hormones then I suddenly developed loads more symptoms at 45

They told me this is a 2nd menopause and I've never been the same since

This has been the hardest part for me.  The original ovarian failure was sorted immediately with hrt

I have symptoms, and they come and go

The hardest one for me is social anxiety, it's been very hard to understand and live around it x

I had social anxiety for much of my 20s. I had no idea it was hormone related. In fact there's so many problems I had/have that I'd no idea were hormone related! Blooming hormones  :-\
