Clare - I really sympathise. Nausea has been the symptom that has caused me such misery over the years. At one point I was on 8 Omeprazole a day and still feeling very sick every morning and evening. In the end I ditched the Omeprazole and gave in to HRT ( I was determined not to take it ). I only rarely feel nausea now and who knows, if I had started HRT earlier I could have got back the three years or so where I felt so very ill. Doctors do not recognise nausea as a symptom of the menopause. I was diagnosed with GERD or acid reflux and given tablets to empty my stomach, to supress the acid and anti sickness, non of which cured me. I was also offered anti depressants which I wasn't prepared to take. I now only take HRT.

That's interesting about the antihistamines. I have now been diagnosed with gastric migraines triggered by my own oestrogen and antihistamines were one of the two things that stopped the nausea, although they made me drowsy and more lightheaded.

I tried all the anti nausea meds from the docs but they all made it worse as they are brain stimulants (didn't know it was migraines at the time so was also force-fed the dreaded PPIs!).

The other product that worked was Emetrol (have to Amazon it in if in UK though which is a shame as over the counter and very cheap if in US and Oz). Each dose only lasted an hour or so but when you're that ill an hour off is heaven.

The pill stopped mine after a week (made it worse first) so getting hormones balanced is the key.

Yes, I can get that feeling of nausea. I feel empty inside, hungry but also sicky too, so that I am reluctant to eat.

It's exactly the same feeling of nausea I used to get when pregnant, right up until giving birth. I was never physically sick, just hunger tinged with nausea. I prepared so many meals, then only had a spoonful because I just couldn't fancy it anymore.

So I 'think' it is down to high progesterone?

In pregnancy its high oestrogen stimulating the foetus that causes the morning sickness in the first trimester, more detail is below from Wikipedia, but you could be getting the progesterone acid reflux which can make you feel sick and hungry due to the excess acid as mentioned here too as there are so many different types of nausea:

Pathophysiology of vomiting in pregnancy
An increase in the circulating level of the hormone estrogen.[9] However, there is no consistent evidence of differences in estrogen levels and levels of bilirubin between women that experience sickness and those that do not.[10] Related to increased estrogen levels, a similar form of nausea is also seen in some women who use hormonal contraception or hormone replacement therapy.

An increase in progesterone relaxes the muscles in the uterus, which prevents early childbirth, but may also relax the stomach and intestines, leading to excess stomach acids and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

An increase in human chorionic gonadotropin. It is probably not the human chorionic gonadotropin itself that causes the nausea. More likely, it is the human chorionic gonadotropin stimulating the maternal ovaries to secrete estrogen, which in turn causes the nausea.

Thanks everyone to read all the information about nausea during perimemopause. It is strange that some doctors do not see it as big issue. I was taking stematil to avoid nausea but it seemed to stop working for me now. So my doctor has changed the medicine. I think this sick feeling is the worst and really stops from being healthy at all. Could some please share any tricks that have worked for them. I am not being suggest hrt at this stage due to perimenopause situation. Also is it due to low levels of progrestrone?

The sickness feeling is one of the worst of the menopause horrors and there are those aplenty, enough to break the strongest of women.  I have experienced nausea over the past years since I entered full blown menopause.  There are periods of reprieve but never know if it will return.  It has immensely impacted on my life.  The worst of it is my GP said she had never heard of it so this made me feel really alone except that I know from the internet that it is far from uncommon.  It is just like morning sickness in pregnancy and surely warrants more research.  I did get some prochlorperazine tablets and I have also taken over the counter travel sickness tablet Avomine.  I try to get a round of toast when I wake.  I tend to only feel hungry very late on at night and with waking every few hours during the night I have a banana or Weetabix and hot milk as it is in the night that I seem to crave food.  Sounds as if I have gone bonkers, well that's how I sometimes feel!  I never imagined that meno could make some women feel so downright ill.  Claire I send my sympathy and to all others with the nausea etc etc.  I think there is also a tablet which is prochlorperazine called Buccastem M form pharmacists or on prescription.

Agree with both of you CLKD and Clare11. Exactly what you said CLKD wrote is what happens to me. All 3 things in row and do not from where it will strike. I have just had ultrasound for checking for stones in abdomen region. Last 2 day I have had very bad nausea and also I have lost weight.

Hi, sickness not so bad recently, been taking the antihistamines, so not sure if they are helping. But now at work my right eye just had a blood vessel bleed, so being me with my anxiety put it down to having high blood pressure, which I am sure I haven't got, well didn't have about 4 months ago.
So suppose what I am trying to ask does HRT help with anxiety probs or is it better to have ADs?
I am on the fence at the mo with going down the HRT road.

I have tried AD and seems does not help. As I have irregular periods now the dr are bit hesitant to give hrt. I will be seeing a specialist and asking for options in this regard. Both anxiety and nausea go hand in hand. I would really like to meet someone who could tell how long this lasts for and whether it gets any better with menopause rather than perimenopause where hormones are all over the place. Keep posted

I don't like the nausea.  Got it so bad in peri, like morning sickness

I had some anti nausea pills left from a bad migraine so on desperate days I took them.  I put them away somewhere so safe I can't find them

Nausea is much much less now I'm post meno but when it does come it drags me down

And on top of that I have been having a continuous sort of headache. Sometimes I take an ibuprofen but mainly not but it's there and head feels as if it is full of pressure. And I have flippin Fizzing in the ears constantly.........
Is this all due to the Menopause?????
