Reduced thyroid function
« on: April 05, 2016, 06:48:57 PM »

The GP surgery has just phoned to advise that my thyroid function is borderline and to repeat in 3 months. I had the same thing a good year and a half ago when it was sub clinical for 18 months and then suddenly corrected itself (to within the correct levels but only just).

At that time I wasn't on hrt  but I am now, and have been for 9 months  so I wondered if the hrt would impact on the thyroid result in any way? If I remain borderline is this the same as sluggish thyroid and is there anything I can do to help it?

There is underactive thyroid in my family so I guess it's only time. I did find a few weeks ago that when doing exercise I felt completely drained all of a sudden, shaky. I thought it might be sugar levels but food didn't bring immediate relief and my fasting glucose levels are ok.

Any comments welcome. Thank you

I know the hrt can affect levels if you are taking thyroid hormone. So I think it would be possible that if your thyroid was already struggling to keep up with demand, the hrt made it even harder. This is only a guess and me trying to reason. While you're waiting out the three months, you can make sure you're eating well and avoid raw cruciferous veggies (broccoli, kale, cabbage, etc) as those can put a strain on thyroid function too. It could be that it's just declining in function and you'll need a little thyroid hormone.

Yes Hrt does effect your Thyroid it should be checked after starting and after every change/increase.

Mine were boarder line to start with then higher after starting Hrt at 9.5 , started Thyroxin 50mg then 100mg saw consultant and am now on 75mg which is correct for me at the moment, but that may change again as I don't feel to well at the moment, even though I'm told my readings are normal.

I would recommend getting checked every six months or more if you change Hrt dose.

Thanks ladies. I've heard that selenium can help so I've bought some Brazil nuts (not the chocolate covered variety!). RE the gluten, is this for sluggishness generally or sluggish thyroid do you know Kate50?

Thanks Stellajane. No I don't know what type is in the family. In both my mum and my sisters case at around mid 50s age wise they had to go on thyroxine. My mum had terrible fatigue and heavy legs. My sister learnt about hers from a routine blood test. I think I recall my mum referring to some other kind of autoimmune 'illness' that could come her way like the thyroid so maybe it is that type. What difference does it make Stella Jane if it's autoimmune or the other type (whatever the other type is!!)?

Thanks for your reply Stellajane, and other ladies, all very helpful. I received a nice note through the post from my GP this morning confirming the TSH was a bit high and to repeat in 3 months. Interesting that she commented no medication required, just the precautionary re test - when I collected a paper copy of my results it was at 5.29. I can see what you're saying about the auto immune angle.
