Hi everyone - I did a thread called " the Burning Club' on MM a couple of years ago so do try to find this. Burning urethra is an ongoing problem for many of us. Forget any herbal or alternative remedies - a waste of money. Long term use of local oestrogen will help but it tends to be a multi prong approach to manage this horrible burning.
The UTI type symptoms are often diagnosed as interstitial Cystitus - which I think is a general term for this burning pain which baffles most doctors - the urologist I saw said he thought it was scarring following infection!!!??? There are some specialists that believe it is still an infection that is deep seated in the bladder and needs long term ABs - however when most women use local oestrogen this burning will reduce significantly within 3-6 month use and the oestrogen treatment will probably have to be continued for the rest of our lives!!!!.
Anyway, my advice is: local oestrogen 2-3 times a week and if possible systemic HRT alongside.
Avoid caffein, fruit juices, sugary or fizzy drinks and stick to herbal teas and water. Make sure you drink enough and have a pee every 3 hours.
Never use anything scented around that area and have showers not baths.
It is vital that when you do a No2 you clean really well - bacteria from our bowels will easily make it's way into our vaginal area and this really causes irritation. Keeping the flora balance of the vagina is important - when atrophy sets in during the peri and post meno stages then everything dries out in the vagina so this leaves the area open to infections like thrush or BV (which can aggravate the burning) and the treatments of these conditions can actually make things worse. I use Multi Gyn Actigel every day (there are other products that also work e.g. Hyalofemme) and often a small dab of Sylk and this seems to sooth the whole area and stops BV and thrush from developing. Tight trousers and anything that makes the intimate area hot and sweaty is also a problem - try to keep this area aired as much as possible and sitting down for too long is a no,no!!!!
Hope that helps. Dg x
