GP visit and daily support
« on: December 04, 2015, 11:34:35 AM »

So, I finally got to visit GP (practice number 3 in as many years).  I thought it went well.  First of all she listened, happily prescribed the oestrogen cream for the VA, I was open to suggestions for the low mood, I said I would like to say I had mood swings but there is never an 'up' one.  She was most surprised at the lack of help I had over the last few years and why none of the previous GP's had ever suggested peri-meno before as it was obvious to her. ::)

Anyhoo, she prescribed me 'Sertraline' that I thought would be fantastic to help me feel better, until I looked it up on the search box here ???  As I have been having to drive to the hospital to visit daughter this week I had decided to start at teatime today, once DH is here till Sunday to drive me about.  I am now a bit on the nervous side about this, so hope you will all agree to help, especially those who have been on those AD's or similar.  I really need to give this a go, as I never want to feel as I did 10 days ago again.  I will record the first couple of weeks here daily and see what you think, due to go back to GP then anyway, appointment already booked (as I am not good at doing that).  Fingers crossed I can ride through any shaky bits.

I understand and appreciate your concern.  I started Citalopram 5 weeks ago and the first couple of weeks were not easy but I took it on a daily basis rather than looking at the big picture.  When the side effects were bothersome I spoke to the pharmacist and armed with the knowledge that I could stop them if it got too bad or did not settle, I approached it a day at a time.  After about a week the effects did not get any worse and I reached a sort of plateau before they started getting less.  After 5 weeks now I can see more benefits that side effects and although I do still get blips I am feeling a bit better and will continue.  My GP is monitoring me regularly too and this place always has someone to offload onto.

We are all here to share each other's joys and sorrows, ups and downs

I think if you accept before you start that it will possibly take a couple of weeks before you see any positive results then you should do well. ;)
We are all here to help in whatever way we can ,stop reading the leaflets ,else we'd never try anything !  ;)
Take one day at a time and try to remain as positive as you can in the circumstances. Fingers crossed for you.

Likewise when I started Citalopram earlier this year. Made me feel worse for about 2 weeks or so, but I was told to expect it & to try  to stick with it. I did & anxiety is much less. Hopefully you will not have any side effects SadLynda. Fingers crossed for you.  :)

Thank you dazned and cubagirl.  Oh yes, I am hoping after the two weeks things will lighten, GP said she is hoping to hear there is just a small improvement and that is what she is looking for when I go back in two weeks.  Just been telling DH he is happy I tell you all more than I tell him.

I take my 5mg of AD at night …… once all the day's duties are done and I can relax.  Let us know how you get on.

SadLynda it might reassure you to know that during the first 3-4 days I actually noticed a shift in my mindset before the side effects kicked in.  That's how I could decide that they would probably help me if I persevered.

thanks BJ that is helpful.

Day One - took first pill at around 5pm last night, as instructed by GP.  Dropped off infront of TV later on (but this is nothing new) felt spacy but not sure if that was real or not, couldnt sleep saw every hour and awake from 5.10am.  Memory seems to have gone awol today too?  Also nausea and headache.

Nausea & headache is what I got too. Unless it gets unbearable try & stick with it SadLynda. It's not nice though. Headaches I can deal with, but hate nausea.  If nausea gets bad try Buccastem which you can get from chemist.

thanks Cubagirl, no its fine - nothing I cant deal with, will certainly bare that in mind though, I had no idea you could get anything for nausea, that is what I was worried about worsening.

Day 2 - Nausea last night, so resorted to neat root ginger to sort it out, did work but not so nice.  A friend in the USA recommended some great stuff to help, but only available in the states sadly.  So I did some research and there are a few things you can get, one I have opted for are some lozengers you can get that are for chemo treatment and pregnancy, both to help with nausea - great reviews.  Or just ginger sweets are good too it seems.  So for anyone else suffering with the nausea there is help out there.

Another friend mentioned peppermint, that is another option.  Feeling fine today so far.
