Early Riser!
« on: November 03, 2015, 08:02:53 AM »

Hi Ladies
Every morning I'm wide awake at 4pm, I've tried all the usual stuff, warm milk, relaxing music, reading, etc. Nothing works so I don't go back to sleep, I've been like it for months now. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to go and work a 9-5. Does anyone have any tips and advice? I'm averaging around 4-5 hours per night.
Thanks

Hi Shellb,

I was slightly later than you this morning - 4.30am! What the heck is that all about? >:(

I  play a mindfulness body scan meditation designed to prepare you for sleep or a Yoga Nidra meditation. They usually work and I get back to sleep till the alarm goes off at 6.15. Sometimes it doesn't so I just go with it and read till it's time to get up and work an 8-4.30 day.

It is very wearing - I'd love to go through the night till the alarm. I can't remember the last time that happened- probably before this peri-roller coaster started.

Sorry I don't have an answer - just what occasionally works for me (with emphasis on 'occasionally') ::)

Thanks Galadriel
It's so exhausting! I fear I will collapse and have a breakdown because of it! I spend all day at work thinking about my bed and when I get home all I want to do is sleep, obviously I can't due to family needs. Maybe one day when I finally get a good nights sleep I will announce it it big shouty capitals!
I have started to do a 10 min meditation with body scan for the last two days before work, it seems to relax me a little before the madness of work sets in. Whilst I was doing this mornings I did think maybe I should try a meditation when I wake at 4am to see if I can get back off. If it works I will let you know.

I used to get up and read for 30 mins max , have small glass milk  :-*and then go back to bed with hot water bottle , usually drifted off again, its horrible especially when it mounts up and you feel a bit mad. ( I did anyway )

Early morning waking is such a pain. I only solved mine by going to bed later. As long as I have five hours in bed now I can cope. It does worry me when I read all of the articles stating that less than seven hours a night means we are at risk from every disease known to man but I would prefer to go to bed later and wake up at "waking up time" than go to bed at, say 11, and wake up five hours later which is far too early to get up without waking up everyone else in the house.

Since peri started it's very rare that I ever sleep past 6am. Back in my bad days, before HRT then the BCP, I would often wake between 4-5am feeling jittery and sick with feelings of doom and dread.

But since hormonal treatment I always wake around 6am, but I feel okay. And I've usually had a decent 6-7 hour sleep. I feel like I should be able to drop off back to sleep but I can never seem to anymore.

But my Mum reports that her sleep patterns changed forever after her surgical menopause in her early 40s. She's always enjoyed a good 8-9 hours sleep a night, but started waking not long after sunrise.

To this day she's always awake by 5.30am but stays in bed listening to the radio and drinking a cup of tea. Also if she wakes in the early hours to use the loo it's rare she can get back to sleep again.

I suspect I will follow down the same path.

Oh I sympathise! It´s 9.30pm now where I live and I´m desperate to go to bed. I know I shouldn´t because I´ll wake up even earlier like you Taz2. I seem to manage on 5-6 hours broken sleep, with 2 or 3 loo visits.
To add insult to injury, i never had children of my own and  although I technically retired from my job and am now a housewife/stepmother, I have to get up at 5.30 to get the kids to school! At my age , I ask you... ???
Well, good luck ladies. Off to make my camomile tea ...

Hi Sparkle
The other half snoring is so annoying! Mine starts to snore before he even closes his eyes!
Tonight I am going to get the spare duvet out and get on the sofa with some warm milk as soon as I wake up.

Have you tried wearing ear plugs in bed? My DH sometimes snores and ear plugs really help.

Also occasionally I take 5mg of Amitriptyline to help me sleep. This is a super low dose but still works for me. GPs are happy to prescribe it for sleeping issues.

I listen to story tapes from the library ( now an MP3 size) with ear phones. At worst, the time goes quicker; at best I dose off and then have to find my place later! It certainly makes insomnia less stressful.

Hey ladies, I have ear plugs, many infact and I'd forgot about them!
I don't really want anymore drugs as I'm already on 40mg citalopram and my HRT.
Oh yes I also.find the dogs snoring very calming almost like a cats purr but sadly I lost my cat a couple of years ago.
