Are these the famous hot flushes?
« on: September 24, 2015, 08:08:16 PM »

Hi, I'm Jan, I'm new on here and this is my first post.

I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing at the moment is the onset of hot flushes.  I'm generally a 'cold' person, I'll often snuggle on the sofa with a hot water bottle if the OH objects to putting the heating on, and usually have my hot water bottle in bed right up until about May.  But things have changed in the last couple of weeks.  I feel a lot warmer much of the time and the rest of the family are amazed that I'm sitting around in a strappy top when normally I'd be wearing my fleecy onsie.  In bed at night, I'm having trouble sleeping because I'm too hot, it's like all the hot air gets trapped under the duvet with me and creates a furnace.  I'm not drenched in sweat, like I've read some women are, just hot and I have to fling off the bed clothes or lie on the top.  It's like my thermostat's gone wrong.  Added to which, very frequently in the day, I suddenly get even hotter.  It's a sort of prickly hot and I go clammy on my upper body, arms and back of the neck, which I can only describe as feeling as if I've just got out of a hot bath.  I don't really get a hot face or go red.  Is this it??

I'm 51, 52 in November and my periods have been bonkers for about 18 months.  I used to be fairly regular, but now, looking at the app on my phone, in the last months I've gone, 25, 48, 16, 26, 90, 22, 34, 54 days.  I'm currently 62 days since my last one.

Although I'm healthy, a reasonable weight, exercise regularly and eat fairly well, I've had a tendency to health anxiety over the last 5 or so years, and before I go off at the deep end and convince myself I've got lymphoma or something awful, I thought that this might be the more logical answer.  I've even taken my temperature loads of times during the past couple of weeks, convinced I've got a fever, but it's been in the normal range.

I don't really want to bother the doctor at the moment, it's not a vast problem right now, but I'd just like to know if this is it, or whether I ought to be worried about my health.

Hi Jan and welcome to the forum.

Yes you are describing hot flushes. You are the right age with an erratic cycle so although not the most pleasant things the fact you are coping well with them at the moment is the most important thing.

Have a look at the menus at the top of the screen for symptoms and treatement.

Only positive thing is you save on the heating bills  ::)

Nice to have you with us.

Hi Jan - welcome!

From what you describe I would say that this is definitely the start of hot flushes. Some women only ever stay at this low level. Mine started just as yours but then progressed to waking up drenched in sweat and finally I also had them in the daytime too.

Once mine got too bad I started on HRT (aged 53) - never thought I would take it - and this stopped the sweats and also other meno symptoms. It's normal to feel really hot with a flush or sweat but for your temperature to show that there is no fever.

There is lots of information on here from members who have gone down the HRT route and those who have tried other remedies so have a good browse around and ask whatever you want!

Hi  :welcomemm:

The joys of flushes. I used to feel them creeping up from my toes, now it's just from my neck.  Problem with mine is I get cold ones too, so I'm either putting on a layer or taking it off again. My face gives me away as I go bright red!  ::)

Hi and welcome to MM Jan1163
It does sound as though you are getting very typical peri menopause symptoms.  I would definitely describe my meno symptoms as simply my body unable to control it's temperature - the thermostat doesn't work any more!!
I'm 59 and still using HRT  - I tried 3 years without HRT and these were 3 lost years.
Do read up all the info on this site to get really clued up.  If symptoms become tough to cope with then there is treatment out there - so don't suffer unnecessarily.  Dg x

Ah .... thanks everyone.   :)  Looks like that's it then.   :(  Well at least I can stop worrying I've got something awful.  Looking back I think they must have started about a month ago, because I was having trouble sleeping on holiday.  We were in Italy and I put it down to the hotter climate, but couldn't understand why it carried on when I got home.  I used to enjoy a snuggle with a hot water bottle and a cat  :(

I think my main worry now (although I realise that might change if things get worse!) is will I suddenly age at a faster rate, and start falling to bits!?

Hello Jan1163 and welcome to the forum.

I just wanted to chip in and say that my flushes started like yours but never did progress into the drenching that some ladies experience. Occasionally I'd wake in the night and realise I was hot but I always got back to sleep. The flushes during the day gave me sweaty underarms and back but that was all. I've had other issues but if you are like me you may find that your flushes don't change very much.

Of course if they just fade away and you don't have any other issues we will all nag you to tell us your secret for a stress free menopause, so don't go anywhere!

Wishing you well.

I am a few months older than you and also haven't experienced drenching in sweat (yet). Your flushes sound similar to mine.

I've noticed I get the feeling of being warm in the night and having to throw off the duvet just before a period is due - have you noticed that?

I did go through a stage of waking up hot and sticky around period time, but not sure now, because I don't get them very often.  Strangely I haven't noticed the heat so much today, but then I've been henna-ing my hair and walking round in just underwear and an old man's shirt, with the window open because it was smelly.  The henna that is, not the shirt.  :D

In the peri meno stage, the flushes and night sweats tend to fluctuate as the hormones rise and fall.  DG x

Hi Jan1163

 :welcomemm: from me too.

Mine started like that too - in fact I also wondered if my generally hot feeling in the day and at night were hot flushes and sweats - little did I know they were just the start and they got much much worse!  Banished for ever while on HRT ( still at 62...).

You shouldn't start falling to bits if you look after yourself - diet, exercise, weight, alcohol etc!  :)
