I think it's probably due to finding a prolapse? Did you not ask

Was the procedure OK otherwise?

Yep they are looking for a prolapse.

It's to see how far your cervix drops probably to check for the beginning of a prolapse although it's better to check while you are standing up - obviously not mid-smear though!!

I had to ask her if I'd heard her right and that she wanted me to cough?? I had visions in my head of men being asked the same

I said I've never been asked to cough before and she seemed quite shocked but said it makes the cervix drop a little??
