Getting increasingly neurotic
« on: September 01, 2015, 09:50:13 PM »

I have of late become a terrible worrier - actually, no, I'm very good at it.   I'm strung out about everything and find I need no excuse to whittle myself hairless.   My car catches a patch of wet in the road and wobbles a bit - of course, it's a flat tyre.  My poor cat coughs and I'm convinced he's going down with TB or something.   (He isn't, he's right as a bobbin but that hasn't stopped me fretting about it).   A little decorative plaque falls off the wall and no, it isn't the fault of a bit of knackered blu-tack finally giving up the ghost after 10 years.    We've got poltergheist activity!    It's wearing, to say the least.

I used to be so common sensible.   Where's it gone?   Anyone else had similar issues?   I never was neurotic but it's ever present at the moment and it is really getting me down.   I must be horrible to live with at the moment because there seems little rational thinking going on.   I'm on tenterhooks all the blessed time and it is thoroughly exhausting.

I'd be glad of any suggestions about stopping fussing about nonsense.

Thanks in advance

Oh you are not alone.

Hubby tells me I worry about everything and if I don't have anything to worry about I will find something.

The only thing I find that helps is distracting myself, reading , walking, gardening. Whatever occupies your mind.

Hi Nefersmum,

you are definitely not alone. I was never a worrier. Any probs and I would decide "can I do anything to influence this" if yes, then I would do it. if no, I would shove the concern into the "ignore it" box.

Now - not a chance. Problem is I am developing some bad habits. I also suffer from eczema and I have found that when I get too tense or anxious I scratch it. So I end up with a horrid scabby ankle. I know I shouldn't but it  feel so goooood!

Yep, I tried mind over matter, if I didn't mind it didn't matter but now that's turned round to be I do mind and everything matters.  Even knowing it's irrational doesn't make it any less bonkers.

Nefersmum are you the one with the Maine Coone?  Think I saw a mention in another thread somewhere  :)

I'm afraid that keeping busy doesn't help when anxiety strikes  :-\ but background anxiety can be kept at bay if I am gardening and not needing to engage with others.

Yes babyjane, my boy is a Maine Coon.

I'm so relieved to hear that this is all part of the routine.   I'm turning into a blithering mess - I have always been the common sensible one in our family but it's all going to pot.   I'm in tears over absolutely nothing and this endless fretting over rubbish is enough to drive me to drink.   I'm such a practical soul normally and I hate being all over the shop.   It's the weird ideas that I can't fathom.   It's a nuisance.

Hopefully it's a phase that won't last too long.   :-\ :-\ :-\

Hello Nefersmum.

Yep, me too. I could worry for England, and knowing it's irrational doesn't help. I've read that it is called 'the dreads' and that description does seem to fit.

Take care ladies.

I am reassured to know I'm not the only one with this.   It's hateful.

It's horrible. Especially the I-must-have-a-horrible-deadly-disease EVERY single time some type of symptom pops out. I feel sorry for my husband too, who has to listen to it... Work saves me. If I hadn't been busy fulltime at work, I really don't know what I'd do. It pushes some of the crazy thoughts out of my mind. I'm also a "checker", as in OCD behavior. One of my big thing is checking the horse stable door at night. I can stare at it saying to myself "look. It IS closed" and yet go back once or twice more to check again. Tiring! I've always been like that though, double-checking doors, coffee makers, etc. But I can't say it's gotten better in peri exactly...
