Alcohol - to drink or not?
« on: August 23, 2015, 02:08:10 PM »

Hi Girls

Who enjoys a drink and how much do you drink per week?

It's now in the news that even a small amount of alcohol is bed for you. Yet a few months ago, light drinking was good for you  >:(

I enjoy a couple of white wine spritzers on a Friday and Saturday night, now I'm not sure if I should be drinking anything at all!!

Having done some research, it seems that light drinking is good for the heart but can increase the risk of breast disease.

And now there seems to be scaremongering about cling film!!

Those of us that suffer with health anxiety are now worrying even more  :steamed:

I do enjoy a glass of wine or two. Red is my drink.
I don't drink a huge amount and have a few alcohol free nights in the week. It's one of my five a day  ::)......fruits that is...not number of drinks.

It's yet another rediculous bit of information. We have just recently been told the safe amount of units is to change.

If they did not keep coming out with conflicting information then I would be more inclined to listen....at the moment I ignore the whole lot.

At one time we were all to go to work on an egg....then they were bad for you.
Butter would kill us...so eat margarine.....now we have to eat butter.
Don't use sugar...use sweetener.....oh no it will kill you too.
Don't drink coffee....stop, all change again....it's good for you.

I could go on... ::)

My motto is....a good balanced diet and a little of what you fancy does you good....moderation in all things and we won't go wrong.

The only thing that has never been bad for is pepper.

Once I've had a couple of small glasses I really don't care  ;D

Actually I do think there is ...or was a different reaction to alcohol at different times of the month. I remember in my younger days I could not drink at all when I had my period. Even a whiff made me light headed. So perhaps being unable to tolerate alcohol in meno is not that unusual when hormones are all over the place.

I'm with you Honeybun - I enjoy a couple of glasses of wine at the weekend but don't drink in the week.I try to have a good diet and have a walk most days and I too think it's everything in moderation. I think life would just be too boring if I had to give everything up x

FORGET what you read in the Press about wine being good or not: it really does depend on who funds the 'research'!!!

Alcohol is a depressant.  It can also dehydrate the body. However, people drink for pleasure, to be social, for enjoyment though I've never enjoyed the after effects of alcohol.  I'm quite a cheap date  ;D.

If you find that you react differently with alcohol then find something different?  A friend couldn't process spirits after her child was born, that was over 30 years ago  ::)

I am with honeybun.....a little of what you fancy.....I dont drink at all now, because it upsets me because of all the tablets I take. It's certainly not because of the so called government guide lines.
How many of us had a tipple when we were pregnant? Quite a few I bet, but only because nobody was telling us not to....I am not saying it's right, I just think their are too many 'experts ' telling us what to do!....What happened to common since?

It's so difficult to now what's what. Having lost three friends recently all with alcohol related cancers ([pancreatic bladder and oral) it has made me question the very idea of drinking any at all but I like my glass of wine in the evening.

The guidelines re units are changing due to the fact that when they were first brought out drinks such as wine were around the 10% or less range and now most wines are in the 12-13% range. A unit is often thought to be a 250ml glass whereas, in fact, a 175ml glass of 12% alcohol is over two units at the moment. I do think that we sometimes underestimate the harm that alcohol can do over time to many of our body parts! Will mull it over at the pub later  ;D

if you enjoy a glass of nice wine, I can't see that it's bad for you, especially if it's decent wine and social - over a meal for eg. (never done the French any harm, has it?!). However, a lot of people drink an awful lot in the UK. I'm constantly astonished. My neighbours drink a bottle with their evening meal every night  :o and apparently that's common.
I drink about 3x a week and usually one glass, and always with food. Sometimes more -like yesterday in the garden, OH and I got through a bottle of 'bubbles' (prosecco) as a treat. 11% and with food and I was fine.
I took milk thistle capsules afterwards though. I'm not a big drinker and I'm an occasional, social drinker. If I drink too much, my M.E flares up.
I'm a wound up sort of person and in the right context, it helps me relax.

I used to love alcohol and drank a lot of it in my thirties and forties. Now it does not agree with me and I miss it. I buy a box of wine now and that lasts me for months, as I sometimes have half a glass with my evening meal. Contemplating at the moment buying some mixed fruit cider - that sounds good! but I know most of it will be poured down the sink as I will take too long to drink it all!

I had been wondering if it is the hormones or not?

I used to share a bottle of red a night with DH, and not that long ago really - maybe 6 years.  Then he lost his job and we got into financial strife so no vino for a while, then it started to give me dreadful headaches, so I went onto organic and that did the trick, so I just drank organic wine two or three times a week, then it gave me headaches :(  But when I say 'headaches' it would start at around 2am and by morning I couldnt get my head off the pillow the pain was unbearable.

I dont drink now - but that is not by choice.

I have a drink about 4 nights a week.  I like white or Rose wine. Most spirits except Whisky.
I agree with Honeybun, if you listened to the 'experts' you wouldn't have anything.

organic wine is made the same as un-organic wine  :-\ [as someone on a programme last week said, it comes out of a bottle don't it?]  ::)

So does Iron Bru CLKD  ;D

I don't drink spirits and haven't for 27 years...gave up alcohol when I was pregnant and never went back on them. In fact I spent 15 years being TT....not sure why though....just didn't like it.

We never have spirits in the house except around Xmas and hubby lashes out on a bottle of Whiskey which lasts until March.

Today...birthday meal. A bottle of fizzy wine....half left in the kitchen which no doubt will go down the sink. 6 bottles of non alcoholic beer...and one bottle of wine, half of which is left for tomorrow.

We don't drink a lot but I want to be able to make my own mind up as to how much.

Organic wine is made in the same way but the grapes are grown differently.  It's a lot to do with added sulphites too. Very complicated.

Off to the pub now. Someone has to support local business.
