What happens after Mirena removal?
« on: August 07, 2015, 09:37:42 PM »

I'm due to have my Mirena removed, but I'm worried in case it sets off bleeding.  I haven't had a period for four years.  What have people experienced after Mirena removal?

Hi Dulciana,
Are you having it replaced or removed for good?

I had my last one removed just over 2 years ago, but that was because it had been in for the recommended 4 years & I had got a bleed anyway (because of that reason) - so I am assuming that if I had it removed for any other reason I would have got bleeding.
Whilst on it I had no bleeds at all.

As I was 55 at the time I tried continuous/combined HRT but that didn't work out to well for me as I had bleeding 3 out of 4 weeks, so after enduring that for 9 monthsI  came off everything cold turkey - & what an awful time I had. :'(
Anyway after another 9 months of a dreadful time I am now on ultra low dose HRT & things are a lot better for me. :)

I suspect you could well get bleeds, but they may settle down after a while.

Thanks Cazikins.  I'll have it removed for good.  Oh well, I'd better brace myself   :-\

I was recently told about somebody in their 50's who had theirs removed and found through blood tests to be post menopause. And they hadn't noticed a thing.
You may be lucky.

When I had my Mirena removed I didn't feel a thing and had no bleeding at all afterwards - I was then 57.  I was already post meno but even if you are still peri meno your lining shouldn't be thick so I doubt there would be bleeding - or at least not straight away. The Mirena can often result in no periods or bleeding and if you are already in your mid 50s you may well be into post meno.
Have you been using any oestrogen?  DG x

Thanks Sarai and Dancingirl.   I'm 56 and post-meno, now and I haven't been using any oestrogen.

Interesting thread.
I'm due to have my mirena removed next year after having it for 4 years.
This is my second mirena.
I feel like I'm getting symptoms already ie feeling like I'm getting a headache but it never comes to anything. Funny feelings in my lower tummy, tiredness.
I felt like this when my 1st mirena started depleting when I had only had it in 3years.
I'm having no bleeds and haven't with the mirena.
I don't know if I will have it replaced. I'm 54 and was told last year I was post meno.

Just to add that it would not be advisable to have a Mirena replaced if you are post-menopausal unless you are also taking oestrogen because the progestogen is powerful and can over-thin the uterus causing ulceration and bleeding. It's perfect to replace if it suits you and you want to also take oestrogen as you only feel the benefits of added oestrogen without the side effects  ie you are already used to them!)
