Don't know what I am!
« on: August 09, 2015, 08:30:51 PM »

9 years ago (ish) I had a lazer abrasion (where the lining of my cervix was lazered away, due to very painful and heavy/light periods) and since then had no periods at all :) This was an amazing procedure, but now have no idea if I am peri, post or mid menopausal, as have no period guide to go by. I now have terrible hot flushes, and night sweats, but luckily no other symptoms to speak of except exhaustion. How can I tell how far into the menopause I am - as I really have no idea :-\

:welcomemm:  browse round, pull down the menus top of screen and make notes.  You sound 'within normal limits for your age' to me  ::)

Your age is ? and how were your periods prior to the surgical intervention?

Hi and welcome

I am 48 and had a hysterectomy aged 32, so I had no idea either. At onset of symptoms surgery did bloods and said I was peri (age 45), few more blood tests later and one GP said post meno then another said peri still

Over the years when I've ovulated every few months I've had sore boobs, last lot of soreness was sept 2014 so I guessed I was probably getting near post then few weeks ago I went from pill to patch and since I've had sore boobs ! So now I'm none the wiser !

I don't really care to be honest where I'm at I just want a good portion of the old me back

Thanks CKLD and Annie,

Prior to the surgery (age 43) my periods were always painful - but either very light and patchy - or the Niagara Falls (with lots of clotting etc - sorry to be "yuck") Even when wearing internal ad external pads I could never be sure not to leak through and embarrass myself.

The surgery was a godsend - stopping my periods altogether - but since then I've never know "where I am" hormonally.
I am now 52, suffering terrible flushes, night sweats, palpitations, exhaustion, and aches and pains in my hips etc.

My doc has given me betablockers for the palpitations, but says to try and avoid HRT ??
Do docs usually say this .... will HRT help with my other symptoms

Just very confused (only just found this site - so many posts I don't know where to start)

Glad to see that it's not just me - I honestly thought I was going round the bend!  :)

You need to ask why your doc feels the need to tell you to avoid hrt, is there a family history of breast cancer, strokes ?

You need valid reasons so YOU can make decisions

I don't know how I'd feel off hrt, I feel pretty rubbish on it since peri started but at least know I'm helping heart and bones taking it, it's all so confusing

I'm looking into starting progesterone, it may be what I need, in terms of body wanting it for balance

Or, I may have developed another condition that hasn't been diagnosed yet as for seventh months I've had double vision (not meno related) although a palsy in the nerves from brain to eye specialists don't seem over concerned but GP got me in quick to see neuro to rule out anything else, that appt is this week

After my initial onset of symptoms 16 years ago hrt was a god send, this 2nd lot (yes gynae said my situation can give 2nd meno and a severe one) I don't know what can/will help

No one seems to know what to suggest

Best of luck to you in your quest for reduced/elimination of symptoms

Hi SmitsAnnie

I'm just catching up with the forum after being away quite a bit and have just seen your post.

The point is if you are having flushes and sweats then you are likely to be well into the menopause - although women vary as to which stage they start expereincing these. I only got them when periods stopped for a few months, then they would disappear when periods restarted. Other women seem to get them even when periods are still fairly regular.

It does sound like you are definitely peri-menopausal though! In your position a blood test might help - although they are very unreliable for diagnosing menopause because levels vary so much!  Here is some information: http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/diagnose.php

I don't know why your doctor has given you betablockers for palpitations when you have all the other menopausal symptomns. To my mind docs are too free with medication when hormone replacement is what is needed!

HRT should most definitely help with all the other symptoms. If possible I would stop the BBs and start HRT if you can and there is no reason medically that you can't take it, and you want it! Are you able to find another doc in the practice who understand and is sympathetic to menopause/HRT?

Do rread up as much as you can about menopause and the different treatements and come back to us with any more questions.

Good luck and do keep us posted!
