Insurance claim
« on: June 27, 2015, 07:50:37 PM »

Looking for a bit of advice.

Today when I was at the supermarket my dear daughter decided to curl her hair. She has one of those professional hair wand thingys that heat up to silly temperatures.
Instead of doing it upstairs with the special stand it has she came down to the living room to watch TV and curl her hair at the same time.

SHE PUT IT ON MY CARPET and BURNED IT.

I now have about a four inch burn....brown, on a cream carpet. Can't clean it off, can't cover it otherwise we can't get in the door.

I have accidental damage cover so will call the insurance company tomorrow.

I have never claimed for years and that time was storm damage.

Do I have a claim, and if so how does it work.

Not sure if accidental damage from tongs will be covered. Possible excess to take into account too.

Could burn be "cut" off maybe if not too deep into carpet?

Bet she feels bad HB.

£150 excess, burn has melted the carpet so no way of it getting cut off.

And oh yes, she feels really bad.  ::)

Guess accidents albeit silly ones do happen. I will see what the insurance company says tomorrow.

She was sitting next to them CLKD  :o so fortunately no chance of that. Only trouble was she was in laa laa land.

For a very bright girl she is a bit...umm daft.

I once tried to claim as my son had put a hot iron on the floor and it got knocked over. And burnt the carpet - a big iron mark on it! Was told by the insurance company that unless there had been flames I wasn't covered.

I think that will be covered.  Many years ago we got a cream carpet for the lounge, only had it for a couple of months and I dropped a full mug of tea over it.  Couldn't get the stain out, we claimed and got the carpet replaced.

my daughter's in laws spilt coffee on a cream carpet, had accidental damage and got a replacement carpet on their policy.

All you can do is ask, or maybe look in your policy booklet but it sounds like accidental damage to me.

Good luck

That will be covered under accidental damage, you should have no problem in replacing the carpet......I assume you are covered with 'New for old '?.......

You could cut out the burn (cut out a good border around it) with a Stanley knife then use a piece from, say, under the sofa, to patch it using glue onto the underlay. Good luck !

No I'm not patching it, it's in a very visible place and it's in my lounge  :o

I've called the insurance company and they are sending someone out to look at in sometime in the next week.
The woman I spoke to did not seem to foresee any problems.

Just have to wait and see, if they won't cover it then I will just buy a new carpet myself.

HB, you carpet is a contents claim, and the burn was an accident......Don't even try removing the mark until the insurance people have seen it.....
