OK - the roof itself may have been finished, the collateral damage hasn't.
OH has been painting and sealing the barge boards.
When doing this, he see's that when one of the barge boards was screwed in, the screw went through the electricity supply cable to the house. The problem being that while the screw didn't go through the live cable it did go through either the earth or neutral cable. It's not possible to tell which it was. Earth, no problem, neutral, potential problems in the future 

He contacts the joiner who did the barge boards as he didn't want to screw the joiner up with the main builder, without giving him a chance to redeem himself. Joiner & electrician chum arrived this morning, all went well till electrician had a few problems & OH made a few gentle suggestions (he's a physicist for f---s sake, oh and was certified for working with live electrics) the electrician got snotty and stormed off. It was decided that joiner would contact another chum who works for the power supply company. We'll see what happens............

Indeed!  Who was in over all control of this job?  Of course you now run into the problem of having to employ a qualified electrician rather than someone who can 'do' electrics

OH had the quaint belief that he should give the joiner the chance to sort things out rather than lose him his job. The person who the joiner got today, is a qualified registered electrical contractor, not just somebody who "does" electrics. The bloke is qualified,  he's just an incompetent t--t with it. If we don't get more sense from the next bloke (should hear something tonight) then we get back to be overall builder who got the joiner in. Ok the joiner may lose his job, but hey ho I'me sure that doesn't matter much to some.........

The builder ought to know that the people he is out-sourcing work to need a  .  Surely anyone would know if they had knocked a pin/nail into a wire

Very frustrating though Limpy when you just want them to do a good job.

When we had central heating put into our last house the plumber made a real mess with our flue. No one noticed until we had our first service and the gas man condemned our boiler 

Hope it all gets sorted very soon.

Oh the company that fitted payed....big time...after a lot of well placed threats  They initially told me I was out of guarantee ....hmmm, don't think so.

Thanks ladies - one thing - it's not restful at all......
If we don't hear from joiner re mains type electrician tonight then I think we'll be contacting the main builder pretty soon

That's exactly what OH said - especially as it was this joiner who'd replaced the barge boards over the cables.......

As of earlier today, the company that supply the electricity think all is well, they have examined the supply to the house and appear to know what they are doing.

Hopefully everything is sorted now.
