Hi jgr
The risks of getting breast cancer from HRT are thought to be less than drinking too much alcohol, being overweight, sedentary lifestyle and the absolute risk is very very small. You need to look at all areas of your lifestyle and make sure you are minimising your cancer risks overall. Here is the information on this website:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/risks.phpAlso much of the risk information is based on the now discredited WHI study - because there were flaws in the experimental design and bio-identical oestrogen given transdermally, along with "breast friendly" progesterone is also thought to be associated with least risk.
According to this website between the ages of 60 and 70 the benefits are thought to equal the risks:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/balance.phpMost gynaecologists also now do not recommend that women need to come off HRT at 60 and can stay on it as long as they wish provided this decision is an informed one. I reported on my recent visit to a private gynae who was happy for me to stay on indefinitley, health permitting ( I am 62) and a couple of years agpo when I had just turned 60 an NHS gynae whom I had to see for a hysteroscopy/biopsy also said he was happy for me to continue.
Of course it is a personal decision and you need to do what's right for you - but no-one should tell you that you have to come off them!
Hurdity x
