Am new and hoping for reassurance
« on: May 05, 2015, 07:07:38 PM »

Began perimenopause last year, went from regularish to 50-60 day cycle, effectively skipping one. The period that arrived was painful and heavy but only lasted usual 5-7 days. However have been bleeding on and off for last 3 weeks so seems body is making up for lost time. Have had heavy and flooding for several days followed by nothing for a few then back to heavy. Having to get up several time in the night isnt helping energy levels but so far no pain, headaches, nausea.
Any advise for natural remedies please, have started to take some extra iron supplements, dont feel wiped out as some periods did before, work and family add to normal level of tiredness. From everything I have read practically everything is 'normal' during this time, but reading and experiencing are different things!
Thank you for any help

Hi and welcome Jems512
You haven't told us how old you are? If you are late 40s or early 50s then these symptoms are typical for the peri meno stage. Unfortunately I cannot recommend any herbal remedies that can truly work - I've tried virtually everything and I should have saved my money and had a holiday instead. Menopace is a good vitamin supplement and there are other brands offering similar good support vitamins and minerals. Vitamin D is essential for everyone as at this time of year as most of us are deficient due to lack of sunshine and this can bring fatigue and aches.
Getting up several times in the night to pee and generally sleeping badly is also quite common and can be linked to a lack oestrogen.
If you are finding erratic bleeds a real problem (and the hormone fluctuations will bring nasty headaches etc) then the Mirena is a good option and then you can simply add some oestrogen via pill, gel or patch.
Do read up all the info on this site to get really clued up and get back to us with questions.  DG x

They call you backmduring the day to talk to you before making an appointment and as a teacher i cant sit by the phine waiting or drop everything tomtake a call. Will keep trying, thank you for advice

Welcome Jems,

Sorry to hear you are going through a bad time and having trouble making a GP appointment. Your GP surgery should have an emergency surgery each day, you may be able to go after work and sit and wait without an appointment. Failing that , make one well in advance in the school holidays , when you have more time. I started at the same age with the same symptoms as you . I would read as much as you can on this site .My Gp suggested the mirena coil for heavy periods which can work well for some women. Ask for a complete blood work up to rule out any other problems and maybe a scan . Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

When I first started peri-meno stage, my doctor suggested Angus castus, which is supposed to help regulate periods. I took homeopathic remedy (on prescription) to start with which helped for a time, and then moved on to the herbal variety (from health food shops) which also helped for a while. Eventually when lots of other symptoms started I went down the HRT route. Good luck with the journey ahead.
