Vaginal atrophy
« on: March 12, 2015, 07:34:55 PM »

Hello, I feel so relieved to have found this web site, relating to VA. which I,ve had for at least 18  months, I,d never heard of this problem, & thought there was something terribly wrong with me . The pain was so bad when having intercourse with my husband, I eventually went to my GP who gave me Ovestin1mg cream. This has eventually helped internally but I,m still so dry around the outside with the skin tearing for seemingly very little reason I,m itching & burning & it drives me mad. I have  tried so many lubes, & replens  with little relief,  :'( Idon,t know if it's a good idea to use sudocrem or Vaseline . This should be at the forefront of menopausal symptoms I feel so angry that I,ve not heard of it, As the video says it should be openly talked about ,like hot flushes etc. Has anyone any advice? My life seems to revolve around my vagina how it feels & how it looks which is not too great. I,m 55 and Don,t want stop having intercourse because of this horrid problem.

Hi and welcome to MM Penners
There are many of us who can relate to your plight - you are really not alone. It's a taboo subject that is embarrassing and I now look at women my age and think "are they feeling uncomfortable around their lady parts?"
My first thought is, are you just using the local oestrogen cream twice a week? Many of us need to use it more often. I find that keeping the flora balance in the vaginal area really difficult and if it's out of balance this tends to make me itch and feel sore. BV and thrush take hold far more easily once we hit meno. I use Mulit Gyn Actigel every day as well as local oestrogen and I'm now back on full HRT as well - I'm comfortable most of the time now and sex is back on the table ;)  BTW I'm 59.
You mention you've tried various lubes and Replens - it get's expensive doesn't it???!! It is about finding the regime that works for you.  Sadly local oestrogen alone didn't help me that much but many others find it really works but often have to do an extra 2 week daily load.  How long have you been using the oestrogen cream?  Have you tried Vagifem which is a bit simpler and less messy to use?
Some women find almond or vitamin E oil massaged into the dry, sore areas can be good - I used this when I was pregnant to soften up the perineum before the birth.
I'm afraid lots of extra lubrication during sex is essential.
I'm sure others will be along with advice.  DG x

Hi DG. Thanks so much for your reply, I!ve actually just been to HOlland & Barrett to look at specifically VIt e. Oil, but it says don't put directly on sore skin, so instead opted for Aloe Vera gel. to try. Will let you know I f it helps. Is Vagifem a prescription only, I thinking of seeing the GP again. Not sure if there's any point really ,  Being on this site has helped me feel better just the fact of being able to share experiences.

Hi - have you tried using the Ovestin cream underneath as well - you can just use what is left in the applicator. Personally, I am prescribed Estriol cream (but I have used Ovestin) and I use it in this way. On the 5 days I don't use the oestrogen cream, I use 'Yes' water-based vaginal moisturiser (underneath as well). I find this very soothing and it also contains aloe vera, but is a more specialised product for the vaginal area.

Hope this might help!

Hi Penners

 :welcomemm:

I do the same as Jenna - I use Gynest pessaries (these have been discontinued now) or Vagifem for my internal local oestrogen but also on my prescription is Gynest cream which I rub on the outer areas - or rather it's really the area in between the outside and the vag. This should thicken up the tissues there as well if used regularly. The Gynest cream is weaker than the Ovestin so can be used more liberally although I'm sure the left over Ovestin does just as well as Jenna says  :)

Thank you so much for your advice , so nice just to talk to you guys and know I'm not on my own with this problem. It needs to be out there for all to be aware of.
