Estrogen- too much or too little???
« on: February 20, 2015, 06:35:56 PM »

How do I know if I need to increase estrogen?

I have symptoms for both!

Tired
Aches
Headaches
Can't fall asleep but stay asleep when I finally do
Hyped up like I've had 5 espressos!! These moments last around 20-30 mins for 2-7 times a day but not everyday
Bloating
Blurred vision
Muscle tension
Anxiety
Mood swings
Depression
Brain fog
Memory lapse
Warm flashes
Cold flashes
Crashing fatigue
Crying lots the last 3 days but nothing for the last 6 weeks

These all happen randomly, nothing is permanent and they don't all happen everyday, I'm guessing its constant fluctuations

I don't know whether to increase or decrease or just ride it out for longer as Ive been in medical menopause for only 7 weeks and the patch and tablets need to settle

Does anyone have any advice, I have felt awful the last few days

Xx

If your hormones are also working then you will have highs and lows …….. = feeling awful.

Have you read the menus, left of screen?

Mine (left menus) disappeared several days ago! They were first put only just above the posting square but now they are right at the top. If you refresh and scroll up you should find them. Emma is busy - I'm sure there is a lot of work involved in the new forum design and website that the team is working on...

Sazduggs - I am so sorry to hear about your symptoms - your body has gone into shock so I don't think there is an easy answer or quick fix. It will take a while for your endocrine system to adjust to what's happening and for them to stabilise. I think you are on quite a high dose of oestrogen - but then if it has disappeared all of a sudden you need it. The tricky thing eventually is to make sure the dose is high enough to keep symptoms at bay, but not too high that it is at the level that we normal experience around ovulation, all the time.

I'm out of my depth here and I think it would be best for you to discuss with your specialist. I know that sometimes blood tests are used to find out oestrogen levels in women who have had surgical ( and presumably medical) menopause - so maybe your specialists will do a couple of these?

Also I know you haven't had a hysterectomy yet (from what I remember on your other thread) but it might help to have a look at the hystersisters website/forum as there will be more women on there who have experienced what you have. I haven't looked at the site or the forum http://www.hystersisters.com/

Hopefully there will be someone else along who knows what this is like after medical menopause.

I do hope your symptoms begin to settle soon

Hi Sazduggs  :)

Looking at your list I would say you're running a bit low- which are your high oestrogen symptoms?

I've been using Oestrogel for 18 months and just when I think I've got my dose sorted I get a break through in my symptoms and have to readjust  ::)

My low symptoms include; joint pain, headache, difficulty getting off to sleep, crashing fatigue, sweats, woolly head, carbohydrate/sugar craving, bleeding gums, ear ache, flu-like feeling, enlarged lymph nodes and my most recent; palpitations, dizziness and a raised temperature.
My only high oestrogen symptom was breast tenderness.

I'm currently using 4 to 5 pumps a day but when things were really bad about 6 weeks ago I went up to 7. I could literally feel my dose wearing off and symptoms starting about 5-6pm.
I'm under the care of my GP who is doing blood tests every now and then to check I'm not going too high. If I feel I'm becoming a bit of a handful for my GP to manage then I will not hesitate in asking for referral to a Menopause Specialist- is that something you've considered?

It's so hard keeping things balanced but I hope you feel better soon x

Hi sazduggs

Cant help with the hrt side of things as I am not on it and don't fully understand how it works but your list of symptoms are just how I have felt for the past 2 weeks. The hyped up expresso feeling has been too much for me and I have to pace around the room which actually doesn't relieve it but talking to myself calmly helps but hasn't taken it away. I just keep telling myself I am going to be ok and sometime burst into tears because of what I have just said to myself !!! I then seem ok for about an hour and then it builds again. I seem to be ok-ish in the  morning but by lunchtime im on a constant expresso and it has scared me. Been a vicious circle for me so I am off to see a private counsellor mon eve as I seem to have lost my life. Mine feels like adrenaline surges BUT my brain is too stimulated anyway and I have to learn to handle it. I started a fast 2 mile walk 2 days ago, it helps a little in the sleep dept. I hope you are a little better xx

Thanks for your replays,

The caffeine feeling I have comes in waves and after reading lots on here yesterday I now think it's adrenaline surges as it sounds the same. I come over very warm at the same time too but not hot flushy. It actually feels like I can feel it running through my veins. What is it? What causes it, I've had them for ages.

The high symptoms I have are random stabbing pain in the breast a few times a day, craving sugar, headaches. I was wondering if the fluctuations are going from too low to too high, to just right as I do seem to have brief moments of okishness!!

I also have brief moments of ok-ishness. Mine kicked off after I was ill in bed for a week and so my gp and myself thought maybe depression as I have a lot on but I am now of the mind its hormonal. I do feel Ive suffered low mood for a while and my last 3-4 periods have been ghastly in the fact my mood has been as extreme as I have ever known it, savage before the period and life not worth living by day 5 of the period with crying. This scared me and I went and told gp who gave me betablockers. I think mine is prob a few things and then my hormones on top are making me dip and lift in extremes.
I have had a fairly comfortable 2 years since my melt down at the start of peri, I accepted things and went with the flow so maybe now I have got to accept these surges. I feel they are like the hot flush as some woman report the adrenaline surge with their flushes. I hope it is cos then we have a name and a reason and for me it will stop the doubt in my tired mind
Hope your a bit better today x
