thanks Ladies, ok im going to see how it goes off the hrt, going to keep my gp appointment for Wednesday just to have a chat and may mention Femoston then as something to consider if I do need to go back on hrt.

Ive taken a starflower oil tablet today, ok I felt faint walking but Im  not used to it and had v little to eat beforehand, but Im getting fainty feelings every day another thing I need to mention to gp.

Ive bought some mangos and kiwi fruit and bananas to chop up to take to work tomorrow for snacking on and will now avoid chocolate bars if I can, even the tracker bars I eat have choc chips, I will get some sunflower seeds to try.

Ive bought more porridge for breakie sachets, will have two with semi skimmed milk this time as it didn't work really with soya milk which I have been taken as meant to be good for hormones?

I will also get some vit d tomorrow to try alongside the starflower oil.

Little steps! x

Hi Karenja

Have you mentioned these fainty feelings to your GP?

Femoston is one of the best HRT's.
Very rarely have I seen it not working on the ladies I have met, since coming here a year and a bit ago, in fact, I think I am the only one, and even then, it was only because I was not absorbing the tablet hrt, and not because the hormones themselves were somehow defective. I take oestradiol now and it works and I would have been happy to have taken the dydrogesterone (the progestin in femoston) in a patch,if they did it, but they don't so I went on utrogestan.
I would say it took a good five - seven weeks for my estradiol to make a difference.

Hi karenja

Just to re-iterate - I think what I said on your fainty feelings thread - that your fainty feelings may or may not be due to low blood sugar.

The point is - don't eat just because you think you have to, because you have been told it's because of low blood sugar! I think what I said on the other thread is that you would know if it was, as these feelings are unmistakeable ie you go from moderate hunger to feeling "fainty", sweaty and trembly in a very short space of time and absolutely crave sugar and need to get it down yourself as fast as possible! (This is what happens to me). If you are not getting this too or anything like it then this may not be the cause. Your doc and the heart specialist should be able to tell you.

That being said - it does sound like you are not eating enough for breakfast. I am exactly the same - my need to keep blood sugar levels up happens in the morning. I cannot get by unless I have a proper breakfast. By that I mean proper slow release carbs ie muesli, porridge or similar. If I'm going to take exercise as well in the morning or I am working ( I use a lot of energy in my work) then I eat more eg brown toast or eggs as well as the cereal. Sometimes I also have banana mid morning. I'm not overweight - well just a few pounds - and I don't generally overeat - just need to eat enough at the right times for me.

Don't go for the cereal bars - they have too much sugar in them, nor the mini-cheddars, choc or crisps (too much fat). Do look on the website I showed you on the other thread about low GI foods which release carbs slowly and keep your blood sugar levels steady (this does not mean it's OK to snack on anything every couple of hours if you have exercise - it takes a lot of exercise to burn up the calories of a high fat/sugar snack like those metnioned!). Yes nuts are good - but quite high in fat so not too many. Wholewheat crackers with low fat cream cheese or something too.

I agree keeping hydrated is also very important.

As for the HRT - perhaps Femoston would suit you better? I thought you had tried that one. If you suffer from digestive/stomach problems then tablet HRT not advised

Also to add (I tried to explain this on another thread) that the main problem with HRT is that it extends the progesterone phase really into 2 and a half to 3 weeks. There is usually 2 weeks of taking progesterone and then when one transfers to the oestrogen only - one is still physiologically under the influence of the progesterone - ie the pre-menstrual phase. In our natural cycle all of this happens in two weeks - following ovulation and before the bleed - but with HRT it is extended. Therefore many women only actually feel good on the second week of the oestrogen only part (if they can't tolerate the progestogen) or feel better on the progestogen part because the first week on the oestrogen only part is withdrawal from the prog. Wish I could draw this - much easier than explaining!

The crux of it is if you find a progestogen that you feel OK on, then all you will have to put up with is a bit of pms for the few days following the switch over the oestrogen only, or you can take progestogen all the time ( if you are OK on it) and maybe not get any pms.

Oh dear that really was a mega-ramble but hope some of it is helpful!

Clear as mud?!  ;D

Well done karenja! Make sure you eat the rolls with brown or wholemeal bread if you can because brown grains, rice, bread, pasta etc is slow release carbs  - having said that we don't eat brown rice and have a hard time getting my husband to eat brown pasta - but it definitely fills you up more with fewer calories. Fill your rolls with salad to go with the ham....

When I worked in office based job I also used to take in Cup-a-Soup as well for lunch - the only really artificial processed food I eat - only because it's very low calorie and fills you up. Researchers found that if you have liquid with food it fills you up for longer. I expect water might do the same but soup in winter is comforting (at home I have home-made!). You could also replace one of the fruit breaks with something savoury to ring the changes - eg a cup a soup and a crispbread sometimes - or cut up some carrot sticks to eat with some of the fruit - if you like them that is, or some baby tomatoes....

One chocolate is fine - good to have little treats - just not a whole bar!

Karens just a quick note!

I am a type 1 diabetic and as such have to be very regimented about my foods etc. progesterone normalizes your blood sugars I.e.,raises them and low progesterone causes low blood sugars and 'faintly' feeling! I discussed this in depth with my endocrinologist recently as I was concerned at my readings with the progesterone! This month I have taken a break from the progesterone and my blood sugars are bottoming out every day!

I would suggest that you cut way back with your fruits - they do contain an absolute ton of sugar - I am only allowed a half a banana a day - you really want slow release foods and not sugary stuff! Hope this is useful info!

Goodness thats a lot of advice- good advice but a lot to consider! Id say firstly be reassured that you are ok, that its ok to come off hrt but you need to give it a go and accept you  might feel a bit rubbish initially but you are safe and it will settle. Next take some good supps and  vits- everything suggested is good and works together but you may need a couple of weeks to feel a benefit.
Weight wise stopping hrt might help a bit with that too. I get fainty if i stand up too quickly or am hungry ( as suggested a packet if dextrose tablets in your handbag will sort that!)
When im dieting i cut carbs because there seems more available to eat!! I have lots of veggies and lean meats, fish , sweet pots, scrambled  eggs with toms and watercress. Cheese with celery batons, but you need to find the diet that fits your life so do some googling. Move more, that helps, and try and do a little socialising, nothing beats a good giggle to make the world  seem a better place! Hope you are feeling better very soon xx

Aww thanks everybody, thanks Karin, had lots of fruit again today, I know I have to watch this with the sugar, bought pumpkin and sunflower seeds (awful), I must admit I had lasagne and chips for tea after being good all day, where can I get dextrose tablets??

On the whole been ok a few light headed moments but better than it was, doctors tomorrow Ive got a little list, not sure about asking to go back on hrt or whether to see how it goes???

I even thought what if my menopause is over today, wishful thinking maybe???  :-\

Dextrose tablets can be bought from any pharmacy. Be very careful with them though. It's a pure glucose shot. I have them for my hubby but he is a Type 1 diabetic so it's a bit different. They give you a very quick boost but a big drop afterwards and you can end up feeling worse.
Better with a banana to be honest.

I NEVER have a dip with them Honeybun - as walkers we always have them to hand, have been a Life-saver on 1 occasion. [not me I might add  ::)].  If I am low on sugar they fizz in my mouth which is quite nice  :D ………. but I eat them if I can't get to my fruits/nuts/banana ……. they stop that nausea feeling.

If one is eating a 'balanced' diet whatever that might be  ::) fruit is fine.  It is filling and the body uses the sugars 'up' ……. I LOVE fresh Pakistani mangoes but they aren't in season for very long  ;) ….. gone off bananas though  :-\ …… even with cream  :-X
