Prompt hrt
« on: December 03, 2014, 09:34:10 PM »

Hi

I am just waiting for my new patches to kick in. It's only been nine days since I started.
I haven't had any flushes since saturday, hope that's just not cos the weather turned cold though.
I am still waiting and hoping I will feel better anxiety and depression wise.

I just wondered, for best results, should hrt be started as soon as possible after meno symptoms start, in order to work best, or does it not work like ths.

My symptoms started at 42 and I was 47 before I got hrt, struggled with femoston for a year with no joy, so I am wondering if the delay may make it harder for my hrt to work?

Thanks

Have a read of the menus, left of screen?  The body rarely gets where it is suddenly so it can take a while before a patient notices a difference in symptoms.

Hi CKLD

I've just been reading through the "hrt, good or bad?" thread and it seems that most women's patches seem to work instantly or in the first week.

This is why I wondered if the delay in getting hrt is why my hrt is not working properly yet?
i dunno where abouts on the left side would tell me this.

thanks

The flushes are usually the first to go and yours seem to be improving so that's good.
The rest can take a while. I started HRT within a year of symptom but still suffer from anxiety and aches and pains.

Be patient, we are all different.

Dandelion, I had similar worries about my patches not seeming to work as quickly as other people's on here (into week 5 and still experiencing symptoms) .  Other members were quick to reassure me that theirs took up to 3 months - 6 in some cases - to have a proper effect. My GP has since said the same thing, so I'd try and hang in there. I guess our bodies have taken awhile to get in this state, so improvements will take time too. Really hope you get some relief soon xx

Hi Honeyb

I spoke too soon, the flushes came back and lasted the night even though its absolutely freezing here, and my IBS has come back too.
I thought the IBS had come back yesterday but I put it down to one off diarrhoea, but it's definitely back today, aw well, back to the immodium.

Hi Briony

Did your symptoms eventually go away?
What hrt dose are you on?

Hi Dandelion

I am on Evorel 50 patches and 200mg Ultogestan for 12 days per month. My symptoms aren't the usual ones - with should/leg ache, tingling/crawling feelings, extreme fatigue, cold flushes, nausea and light headedness being the worse. I didn't really notice much change when I began HRT . Then suddenly had two days of feeling horribly wired and anxious (about three weeks in). Nearly stopped taking it (was convinced my estrogen had gone too high and I was about to collapse etc etc!). However, this eased and suddenly I woke up feeling happier than I have done in ages. Hadn't realised that feeling a little anxious had become so normal I was no longer spotting it til it was gone!

I did have two days of random fatigue and nausea before this (fine one minute then out of it the next). Still not sure if this was an initial  side effect of the patches or because my estrogen is now too high. However, this week (week 5) it has calmed again and I am feeling determined to persevere and see what happens. Must admit, it was thanks to the encouragement of people on here that I have made this decision - on my own, I'd have been miles too impatient!

I did go to see my GP who was keen for me to wait for three months before doing anything different. She says if there is still nausea and fatigue occurring even then, it must be my own cycle conflicting with the HRT so she will switch me to Qlaira which is strong enough to dampen my mind-of-their-own hormones. (It's a new HRT combined with contraceptive pill which has a kinder estrogen than the usual pills).

Basically, what I am trying to say through all this waffle is give it a go, and don't be surprised if things seem a little worse before they get better. I am no expert on all this, but I think we have both let our bodies suffer with little estrogen for several years (at an age when they still needed a lot) so a few teething problems when we suddenly start having this hormone again are almost inevitable.

How are you feeling today? Have you noticed any difference yet?

hi Briony

thanks for your post.
Sorry you have all these symptoms.
I will look up Qlaria
I have some flushy days with IBS but other days I am ok.
It's freezing here, but although I have crap windows that let the cold in, I am sat here with no heating on and a thin top.
Dunno if I am flushing or just ok.

:)

One other thing you could maybe try is the gel, which would give you more control over dosage, maybe? What do you take for your IBS? I have found nothing beats Milk of Magnesia. Was gutted when they stopped making it, but luckily it is back on the shelves again .

The best thing you can do for IBS is control it through your diet. Milk of Magnesia and Pepto Bismol are full of salts which in the long term are really not a good idea.

Start a food diary and note what helps or triggers your IBS. This is a long term thing so the less meds you take the better. Look at herbal alternatives to help but basically the best thing is watch what you eat.

I know it's not easy but I have had IBS for about eight years now and rarely take over the counter meds. It's trial and error and taking notes.....Oh and herbal. Couldn't manage without that.

Hi honeyb

Thanks for the post.
My doc prescribes the immodium and pepto bismol.
I am wheat intolerant and that doesn't help but I don't qualify for free nhs gluten free food as I am not coeliac.
I should not eat bread but I love it. It's also cheap.
The patches have helped the IBS significantly though, it has come back but nowhere near as bad as before.

There are herbal drops that stop the runs and stomach rumbles. They are called Tormentil and although they cost about £10 they last for over a month.

They work really well and are completely natural. Have a Google.

I am also wheat intolerant which I find difficult when we visit friends like we did on Thursday.  My bowel has been irritable since then. Bad enough explaining husband is vegetarian without expecting people to provide wheat substitute foods.

When I have had wheat products I can weigh up to 2lb more the next day then it goes away once I get back to normal.

Sorry dandelion this is about your HRT not my IBS
