Sertraline & Diazepam Advice
« on: December 01, 2014, 05:38:49 PM »

Hi

I explained the probs with hrt and with Citalopram so he has now given me Sertraline 50mg tablets to take half a tablet for a week then one tablet thereafter, he has also give me diazepam to take whilst waiting for these to kick in should I need to calm my anxiety, he says they are better than Citalopram less side effects???, any thoughts/anybody tried them?

I mentioned my heart scare and fibroids following clairvoyant, well to be honest the clairvoyant made it worst Ive been worried about my heart for some time with all the stress, with my palpatations, and tight chest and panic attacks, for the fibroids he is referring me for a scan through the nhs, I could have been referred for the heart scan to but he said I would not be classed as urgent and it could take at least 6 months, so he has referred me to a private hospital, I have rang them and it will be £150 just for the consultation with the cardiologist, but you cant put a price on peace of mind I guess.

I don't really want to be taking anti depressants and Im scared as I actually felt suicidal on Citalopram once and had to stop them straight away as it frightened the life out of me, apparently this is not uncommon, so very scared, and really don't know where to go from here.

I could I guess go back on the hrt and take the ad, but there would be a right mixture going on :( xx

Was the appt 'good'?  Did you feel listened too?

I would take Diazepam over-night.  You don't say the dose but I would expect 5mg?  Another in the morning.  When do you need to take the Sertraline? and are they easy to cut in half?

£150.00 isn't a lot to pay, I was charged that type of amount in the 1990s!  Is your GP sending a referral letter so that you have to wait for the appt. date or do you take the letter with you?

I have tried diazepam before they do calm me x

I had valium but not the other medication.  I'm sure someone will be along about it.  Let us know how you get on!

I was like you and was nervous of the SSRIs. As a result I never settled on any of them because deep down I didn't want to be on them and knew I didn't need ADs. I found Sertraline the worst one for me but I also know others who have been helped by it so don't take what I say as the full facts, please.  Good luck with whatever you do.

I can't advise you as I am not a doctor. I can only say what was my experience.

You have been to see your GP for advice who will be prescribing daily.

I would take valium over-night and in the morning.  When did your GP suggest taking the Sertraline ?  Once your mind is settled over-night you can then try the latter medication as prescribed.

I have diazepam 2mg in the drawer. I have 12 left from a pack of 15 that I got eight months ago. I am terrified of becoming dependent on them. It's just enough to have them if I really need them.

I tried AD's but they were not for me. I have found ways of coping on my own.

Why don't you try St John Wort to start with. They are for mild to moderate anxiety and very effective.

It's good that your GP is sending you for a scan as it will put your mind at rest.

St John's Wort has to be a 'stand alone' treatment ???? not something I knew about …….

St John's Wort can't be taken with another AD.

It's,widely used in Europe as a starting point for treating anxiety and depression. Germany is the biggest prescriber I think.

It's something to consider if you can take or react badly to ADs.

I was put on AD 10yrs ago age 33 for depression no reason for it life was good but was told it can happen chemicals in brain! I was given a new AD can't remeber name and it almost drove me over the edge. Went back to GP and was given amitriptiline the old fashioned one and I can honestly say when I started taking it I felt so relaxed, calm. I remember waking one morning and my insides just felt relaxed so good. From that day on I never looked back. It's not for everyone but for me it was. Haven't needed AD since but I would definatly ask for that if I ever neede them again. Funny how we all respond different

I am on sertraline if you search you might find some old threads it might be under Lustral or Zoloft as well. I was a mess when I started the sertraline & it has helped but it did take time & the side affects where hardcore. I had
Up to 10mg diazepam to take at the start too as well as sleeping tablets. If you can stick it out it's a great AD for hormonal issues. I take 100mg each morning xx
