Hearburn
« on: November 07, 2014, 09:45:14 PM »

I am at the end of my tether with this >:(   i Have haitus hernia and I have taken the old ulcer drugs for over 20 years with limited sucess. I have tried most of the newer ppi drugs like omepazole and get horrendous side effects (constant headache and very upset bowels and abdo pain and wind) although they get rid of all heartburn wonderfully.
I have seen my GP 5 times in past few months and he has kept trying me on different drugs to no avail.
Today I have had to take an antacid 6 times and still have constant burning sensation at base of throat and thats with my medication. I haven't eaten anything that I know gives me heartburn like cake.
I am going back  again next week.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Probably can't say anythng useful as heartburn is rather new to me :(
I have started suffering in the last few months particularly after big meals.  I haveput weight on since the meno hit so I don't think that helps.  I'm currently having blood tests etc and have been prescribed the standard med.
Sympathise to you as it's horrible isn't it.

It's awful!  I have to sleep upright if it hits.  I don't take my meds too late as that will trigger heartburn for me.  I had soup for lunch today and could feel it giving me symptoms, soup for goodness sakes, there's nowt in it  ::) - maybe it was the fresh bread!

Have you tried good old Milk of Magnesiua?  or plain old milk which people often find helps an ulcer?  Eating slowly, little and often ……… plain foods, i.e. grilled skinned chicken on a bed of rice?

I do sympthatise. [can't spell though  ::) ]

Have you tried alternatives. I was on PPIs for years and struggled with side effects.

I tried different things until I managed to get off all the meds. Now if I have heartburn a Zantac helps.

Aloe Vera juice is very good, a strong pro biotic, porridge to star the day. It's not easy but it can be done.
I'm quite lucky in that there is a great alternative practitioner near me and he gave me some great advice.

Might be worth a try.
A gastroenterologist once told me that the PPI cycle was very difficult to break because the longer you take them the more you need and so on it goes.

Is the idea to layer the gut? i.e. with milk?  I found years ago that garlic affected me but I can tolerate it now.  How about trying ginger biscuits? or sliced root ginger?  Or plain live yoghurt?  I used to give my dog the latter, a large teaspoon several times daily as her chemotherapy gave her heart burn  :-\

I have some stomach issues since meno but not heartburn last time I had that I was heavy pregnant, horrible.
CLKD I haven't been able to cry for couple years now probably due to having to hold everyone up through loss in past years but when you mentioned your dog and chemotherapy it brought a tear to my eye the thought of it, second tear this morning, first was that poor girl that died, she proposed to ed sherran at his concert last week, my girls were at it and told me she had passed away age 19 heart breaking,
Sorry country bumpkin off the subject of your post

Both my husband and my father suffer heartburn at times of stress. Do you think this could be the same in your case? Are you under any kind of emotional stress?

Hiatus hernia is 'common' in ladies of our age  >:( ………… so managing the excess acid is important.  If it gets to me I go for a plain diet for a couple of days with lots of 'rennies' …… then gradually get back to 'normal' grub, I find plain warm toast comforting.

As this is causing you such discomfort and you know that the cause is not just excess acid but an actual hernia could you have the operation to repair it? I know it probably sounds daunting but as nothing else is working it may be a good decision.  Do you know which type you have?

Hi there, I use Zantac too, or its generic Ranitidine (a lot cheaper), works well for me, I get a bit of reflux when I'm anxious, and then I worry about damaging my esophagus  :-\...more anxiety...

I have a repeat prescription for Fybogel Meberverine, use it twice a day for IBS symptoms, I know if i miss it for a few days my system seems to slow down and feels like it's 'backing up'.

I did try Omepazole but it caused bad bloating and constipation, probiotics are good I think, I have some expensive ones in the fridge which I always forget to take and are prob out-of-date now though  ::)

The Zantac/Ranitidine are good, you take them only twice a day, I don't know about long-term use but seem to calm things down in times of need

"Ranitidine is in a group of drugs called histamine-2 blockers. Ranitidine works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces.

Ranitidine is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. It also treats conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Ranitidine also treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions in which acid backs up from the stomach into the esophagus, causing heartburn"...from Drugs.com

It does get depressing having to rely on drugs though doesn't it, to make the body work the way it used to xx

Thanks everyone, it just helps to read all your replies even if you don't think you can help.
I have a small sliding hiatus hernia and having known someone who had the op I really don't want to do there, she suffered horrendously afterwards and could never ever be sick.  The new proceedure of magnetic beads is not for haitus hernia sadly.
I find that soup, oats, cake, tomato based meals or anything herby or spicy is a killer for me.  I am very overweight and I am sure this is making it much worse but am now due to other issues trying very hard to lose weight but it is very slow due to my thyroid problems ::)
I have stopped the cimetidine as I was worse on this and gone back to famotidine, same family of drugs though.
I have realised that I have a pattern in that my heartburn gets steadily worse over a week and ends with me practically drinking gaviscon and thinking I have to do something and then it gets hugely better and I only need a couple of rennies once a day then after say 2 weeks its off again.  I used ot think it was hormonal but it stayed the same post meno???
I have lost 2lbs this week :) :)
I forgot about milk of magnesia, I used that in pregnancy 34 years ago, it was vile ;D

Is there something you could swallow half an hour before meals? to line the gut?

I love milk of magenesia, it's in tablets as well  ;)

As for Fybogel  :sick02: ...... I tipped my packets into our compost  ;D

I find that soups give me wind = heartburn - too much air taken in whllst drinking it?

well - I woke in the night with severe pain in my right ear, down the side of my face and into my neck; across my back internally and decided it was indigestion.  I have had this intermittently for a couple of years but not often, I usually forget by morning.  However, DH made a cuppa in the middle of the night so I was awake for ages.

After a Rennie the sensation went away.  It was the heartburn which was background too.
