Aching arms - desperate
« on: November 06, 2014, 06:20:45 PM »

Hi everyone.

Im new here (did my intro a few days ago)

Im 51 yrs old. Just hit meno bad; no period to speak of since April, though ive spotted for the past few days. Have had dozens of dreadful hot flushes and night sweats daily, for past few weeks.

Cant have HRT because of serious health issues...been on Menopace for 8 days and Red Clover for three. Now experiencing terrible aching muscles in my upper arms. Cant sleep for it. I really rely on my arms for everything as i'm paraplegic. It is so painful to transfer from my wheelchair to sofa/bed/car that I'm hardly moving. But then staying in one position makes it worse!

I know there's not much to be done but tough it out, just wanted to vent, and indulge in a little tea and sympathy with the girls.

Thanks for listening.

<hands over warmed crumpets with butter>

have you been in and out of your chair/bed etc. more in recent days?  Are you able to take pain relief?

Poor you  sending you a hug

Did it come on suddenly? Is it worse at night? Maybe a trip to the gp needed?

I believe that as oestrogen drops off muscles become lax  :-\ - physio perhaps?

Hi. Maybe some gentle exercise like swimming. Has helped my shoulder & arm aches. Not gone completely, but less painful.

Sending you hugs Tawanda  :)

Arm pain is my latest symptom since becoming perimenopausal. GP gave me a card for physio, don't know where you live, but in Scotland it's now done through self referral.  I have been taking some ibuprofen which does help a little.  The cold damp weather seems to make joint/muscle problems worse for some reason.

Wishing you well, let us know how you get on.

I'm sorry to hear you're struggling Tawanda. An osteopath told me that as our oestrogen levels fall (and your hot flushes/night sweats suggest that yours are) the suppleness that we've had up until this stage of our lives declines and things that we previously could do comfortably become uncomfortable. She told me that it's tempting to start to move less or to move differently to protect whatever is hurting. This, apparently, can create a different set of problems. It sounds to me as if you need guidance from a physio or similar via your GP/specialist. "Toughing it out" for now sounds brave but maybe isn't the best option when your independence is compromised? Are you unable to take HRT in any form or at any dose? Is your GP well informed enough about HRT to be absolutely sure that you can't try it to see if it helps? Good luck

I had the same thing but it was in my legs. The pain was unbearable and got worse at night so I started to try and work out what could be causing it. In the end it was the Menopace that was causing it, I stopped taking it and the pain went away straight away.
It may not be the same in your case but it might be worth giving it a try for a week
to see if the pain gets better.

Hope you feel better soon. x

Thank you all!

I am still moving as much as usual, no more no less. Transfers come as natural to me as sitting/standing do to all you ABs (able bods). I don't usually even think about it. Once, when trying to assess me for a downstairs bathroom (I live in a house with stairlift) i was asked to record how many transfers I did daily. We were astounded to total 44! So, as you can guess Im pretty active.

I refuse to slow down or allow it to impact upon me if I can - I cant not transfer any more than an AB could remain standing in one spot all day  ;)

I attend a Spinal Injuries Unit twice yearly so may well contact the physio dept there for advice.

Re the Menopace as a possible cause, carm 01, is this a common side effect? If so what is it in the ingredients that does it? Should I perhaps switch to a good general multi-vit without the added isoflavone (which is why I started taking them eight days ago)

Thanks once more for all the tea, sympathy and esp the crumpets!

<washing up plates/cups ready for next time>  ;)   :cupcake:

I would give your physio a ring for advice sooner rather than later, allowing for holidays and time of year it may take a while to get hold of her!  You could also stop your 'additional' Menopace etc. to see whether they have made a difference?  It could be as simple as the coating causing problems!

Well. I stopped taking the Menopace and the pains stopped immediately! I'm so shocked. I thought it was only a good multivitamin with a low dose of isoflavones....

Job Done!  It's surprising how one formula suits a person but upsets others  ::) .........

Tawanda, I'm so glad things have improved. You could consider making a note of your side-effect from Menopace on the "Yellow Card" website for reporting side effects from prescription and non-prescription medicines. I've never used it but I've had a quick look and it seems pretty user-friendly. Anyone can report a side-effect whether they are a member of the public or a healthcare person. I've no idea what they do with the information.

I often forget the Yellow Card system  ::) - I think 1 can record how effective drugs are too.
