Gym membership
« on: August 27, 2014, 03:21:02 PM »

Has anyone got a gym membership? I am thinking about getting one for my birthday. Quite fancy going to yoga and pilates classes. Anyone go to the gym and what do you do there?

Nope.  I joined many years ago and never went.  We have a treadmill, hardly ever switched on.  I get exercise around the house and garden - probably not enough but it's a start.  When I owned a dog I walked 4/5 miles daily ……….. I know I lack stamina - let us know how you get on!

I have a monthly swim membership which I really use. OH has the gym part of it but seldom manages more than once a week. It's a rolling 30 day contract though. Don't think I'd ever take out a yearly for anything.
How much do you enjoy it? My 91 year old friend told me you've got to do something 21 times before it becomes a habit!
Good luck. Classes are quite fun.

My husband has been a member of the local council sports centre gym for over 20 years and has always been 3 times a week. He started due to having a sedentary job but when he changed to a more physical job by then it was as natural to him as breathing and a good outlet for tension and his body doesn't look nearly 60  :)
I joined a ladies only gym once 12 years ago and went for 12 months but couldn't afford to renew the membership.  I have a bicycle and I love walking am fit and not overweight so I don't spend the money on gyms or classes now.

I have given this thought over the years. What I really want is somewhere clean to swim. As for a gym, my hubby is a bit of a pain because he tells me to walk to the gym and walk back....job done.

Get a trial.period and see if you like it first.

I do quite a lot of gardening but nothing else. I used to belong to the gym 5 years ago and went for a couple of years - gym stuff twice a week and 1 pilates class per week. I just feel as I have got really unfit lately and I am not one for going for a regular walk on my own. Use it or lose it they keep saying. I am also cutting down at the moment one of my anti-anxiety drugs and I thought this would give me one direction to focus on. Would also like to lose half a stone as well. With the winter coming in. I really need to get out of the house more. I feel as though I have shut myself away this summer - not been anywhere, not done anything etc etc. Everything I have done has been concentrated on the house and garden. Hey ho.

My hubby and I have a couples membership at our local gym.  He does gym 3 times a week and I do it twice then do a double class on a Wednesday, one "legs, bums & tums" and then Pilates straight afterwards.  My membership cost works out at £22 per month but we certainly get our money's worth - gym and exercise classes are £4 a time but the Pilates is £6.90!

Bramble - I'd say moderate exercise helps anxiety quite a lot. Classes might be the answer. I go to two where we undo all the good effort afterwards at the coffee shop, but it's fun and sociable.
Your local council gym might have over 55 membership at reduced rates as ours does. (don't know your age so excuse me if you're nowhere near that!).

Honeyb - can't tell you how much nicer it is swimming outdoors in the Lido than in the chlorine pit, indoor "leisure centre" pools. And you can change outside where I go, in a perspex lidded (warm!) change cubicle so no need for other people's hair on the floor (the showers at most pools are a horror story).
I hope you can find somewhere although in Scotland, I imagine it'd be indoor for sure! I'm hoping the Lido will stay open all year round. I plan to buy myself a cheap, bright pink dressing gown for poolside  ;D

my oh has attended the gym for 18 months and is really feeling fitter. encouraged by this i took a months trial membership. first of all the equipment looks far easier when you see other people using it.  my months trial left with me really painful knees, which i had not previously had  although i walk the dog every day........ i dont think i will continue using the equipment.. lol.. maybe the other activities at the gym would be less stressful ...

just one tip if you (like me) get cramp a lot. don't go to a yoga class. Everyone is lying there, all zen and chilled out, doing their stretching - and you're trying not to yowl out loud as you've got cramp  ;D

step class is very hard on the knees. I go to an over 50s aerobics. I'm about the youngest there, but the teacher tailors it so you can work as gently or as vigorously as you like to suit all. Then there's some weights exercises, stretching, pelvic floor and the stuff I cheat on. (sit ups  ;D).

If you do go a gym gym, it's worth getting a proper induction so you can work out which machines might be bad for you and which good. I can't use any shoulder press ones for eg.

I belong to our local y and go 5 days a week in the winter - love it and fabulous for anxiety which is when I first started going. I do a few classes but mainly, running, rowing and cycling. Spin classes are good. Key is to start slow and build up! My membership can be cancelled at any time so we cancel in the summer when we golf instead! Can 100% recommend it!
