Morning Anxiety
« on: April 09, 2014, 07:34:01 AM »

Can anyone give me any advice on how to combat morning anxiety? When I wake up I usually experience a  rush of what I imagine is adrenaline, as I feel sick, anxious and scared. Plus, of course, the inevitable hot feelings that are ramping up now I have had to come of hrt which doesn't help. Every ache and pain seems exacerbated too! I have usually already been up a couple of times in the night for trips to the loo but tend to do that on auto pilot and don't notice the feelings then, just on morning waking. Any tips ladies? ..it's a horrible way to start the day!

Unfortunately its very common. I hate it. I take a low dose beta blocker at night and that helps a bit.
I also don't fight it. I was reading a book that explained the adrenaline surges that happen and if you accept that you feel this way and it does you no harm then you can start to break the cycle. I have had these feelings for over a year now and the more I battle them the worse it gets.
I have started to feel a bit more in control since I tell myself just to accept this is the way it is at the moment, and not once has anything bad happened.

The mind is a funny thing but I do know you can start to improve.

I get these feeling too, and I'm on HRT and have been for 2 yrs.  I find that when I'm wound up which happens a lot nowadays it's worse. (hubby's dad has got Alzheimers and we are string to look after him in his home, whilst keeping ours going and our shop too) The more I worry about the feelings and try to stop them, the worse I get.  This last few weeks I've been taking vit B6 and wether it's being hopeful, or wether it's the pills, something is helping, but it normally takes me half the morning to "get going".   What also helps is a good night's sleep, but I get nightmares too so a good sleep doesn't often happen.   ???

I seem to feel worse in the morning. I wake up in the middle of the night and spend the rest of the night dreading morning coming and having to start functioning. This has been going on now non stop for well over a week whereas in the past it was always just a few days and then the sense of foreboding and anxiety would just lift of its own accord. I am finding this very difficult to cope with and would love to find something that helps us cope while we get through. I couldn,t bear it if I thought this was never going to end

Thank you for your replies Ladies, why is it we have to experience this? I feel that it is a physical symptom
and wonder if there is anything that can help? The horrible swooping sensation that washes over you, and the  jittery feelings that accompany it are miserable.  I didn't feel quite so bad on hrt so wonder if it is hormonal.. I find am better on the days I work  as there is no time to dwell on it but on days off any chance of a nice relaxing lie in are a thing of the past.. Hopefully it is a stage, and will pass.. as you say, Katem, the thought of having to put up with this long term is pretty grim..

Apparently it is due to serotonin being low in the morning. Only thing that works for me is to get up and go for a walk/exercise first thing - think it releases happy endorphins which help.

I agree with getting up when you waken up. The longer I stay in bed the worse I feel.
If you can get your head around the fact that this is just a feeling that can't harm you then it becomes easier to cope with.
When the feelings start with me I no longer panic. I try to tell myself that it's just a feeling that will not harm me. The more I tell myself this the less intense the feelings are.
It's a work in progress for me but it is getting better very slowly.

The book that I have found helpful is by Dr Clair Weekes. It is called Self Help for your Nerves. It's a bit old fashioned but a lot of it made perfect sense to me.
She suggests that when faced with these feelings there are steps to take and practice.

Facing.
Accepting
Floating
Let time pass.

She explains in detail why your body is doing this and how to break the cycle

Suzieq-the serotonin being low in the mornings makes sense-but why now , unless it is inked to menopause/hormones?
Honeyb-thanks for the info about the book, I will have a look on Amazon- It will be interesting to read about the reasons why this happens. Also I do like  a 'plan' to follow- it makes me feel like I am doing something to help myself

Hi Diamonds and pearls

It feels physical for me too, like that feeling you get in your stomach when you are on a rollercoaster or going down a hill.
Magnesium kills morning anxiety for me. I've been taking it a few weeks now and it's really nice to wake up and not have that horrible raw panicy feeling.
I was using mag citrate which worked well, but I went onto mag malate as the citrate gave me the runs.
I would avoid magnesium oxide, to me, its only good as a constipation aid, as only a tiny bit gets absorbed.
It does work for some people, however.
It's the most common one and when you see a tin with just magnesium on it, it's probably oxide.
I split my dose throughout the day.
You do need enough though, so you might want to gently up the dose till you find the right dose for you and you no longer wake up on red alert.
I found that once I got the right dose, it kicked in pretty much straight away and was up and running in a few days.
The time it takes to work may vary among individuals.

Hope that helps.

Hi Dandelion,
I've been taking Magnesium for about a week now.  I got it from Healthspan and have realised it is Magnesium Oxide.  I would prefer Magnesium Malate or Citrate but not sure of reputable brands.  Which ones have you used?  I am going to consult doc to see if he can recommend.  If I can beat this anxiety then I'll be almost back to my old self, fingers crossed.

Low blood sugar causes anxiety surges.  How is your diet?  Eating little and often can help.

When deeply depressed I would wake up absolutely terrified with feelings of dread  :'( ........ any time after 4.30 a.m.  :-\ .......

For me when adrenaline hits it's like hot water coursing round my veins .... a strange feeling but not I do recognise it ........ it's the anxiety nausea that floors me  :'(

Have you ever been physically sick with it CLKD, or is it just a feeling of nausea.

I feel like that too and also light headed and faint. Not once up to now have I ever been sick or fainted during an anxiety attack.

That's the basis of my trying to change the way I think and deal with the attacks.
If I accept I feel this way and nothing bad will happen then I can just move on.

Dry retching  :-[ with fear and anxiety
Until my eyes ran .....

It doesn't matter that nothing bad has happened previously (in psychology speak) but it's how I feel in the 'now' ...... and those physicalities are impossible to work through without medication  :-\

Glad it's working for you!

Thank you Ladies, for sharing your experiences and also for giving me a few ideas to try..Dandelion I shall definitely buy some Magnesium , and CLKD I shall keep some biscuits beside my bed from now on in case  low blood sugar is part of the problem. I do so identify with what you say about how you feel in the 'now'- and the feelings of terror and dread..and for no good reason, seemingly! It's so odd, all I want is to wake up feeling relaxed and refreshed and instead (to use Dandelion's phrase) I wake up on red alert..and have no idea why!
