flossie , try it and see but take note of all the points above , I tried it and initially thought it worked , suspect those who get on well with it would probably not notice much difference without it ,

Agree, but I still like a tiny dab daily, for the  unseen advantages just like estrogen and its very good for the skin too.

Looking at the link- why would gynaecologists be prescribing what is essentially a beauty treatment for facial wrinkles?
I wonder who funded that piece of research?

Silverlady

Is the prescribed progesterone stronger than the cream you can buy over the counter? I only tried the one you buy and read a book about it thinking it would solve all my issues but sadly was not the case so wondered if the prescribed was different ?

Sarah2 I posted this in 2012

" What if progesterone had a role similar to estrogens in skin health and could be used topically to prevent or partly reverse menopausal skin deterioration? A study published in The British Journal of Dermatology in September 2005 seems to point in that direction. This 16-week study in 40 women, conducted by Dr. Holzer and colleagues, evaluated the effects of 2% progesterone cream on function and texture of the skin in women at or after menopause. The study design was robust: double-blind, placebo-controlled, and randomized. The results showed 23% increase in skin firmness, 29% reduction in wrinkle count near the eye and almost 10% reduction of the depth of laugh lines. No serious side-effects were observed"

If you google you will probably find it.

I think the criticism of what you can buy over the counter - or rather by mail - is that the product may not contain a precisely controlled amount of progesterone ( and if it is actually progesterone anyway - I think there is some dispute over this from a pharma aspect) and that even if Serenity contains progesterone in a form that the body can use, the cream may lack quality control, meaning that the active ingredient is not distributed uniformly throughout.

I wasn't making a point about research done by dermos- I was asking why- according to the intro in the link you posted- a gynae would be offering a face cream for wrinkles!

Prescribed natural progesterone comes in many forms as is definitely stronger, suppositories, capsules, gel Crinone, I think its still available,

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/pregnancy/medicines/crinone.html.

Natural progesterone can be  used alone as in PMT or use to be, Dr Katherine Dalton pioneered it (she was British)

http://www.drpettle.com/menopause

Some women do better on natural progesterone, some on estrogen then of cause they have to take some form of progestin/progesterone to shed the lining of the womb.

There is a 20-1 cream that consists of estriol, estriol and progesterone for women who need estrogen as well and don't want to take prescribed HRT.

If your mindset is for a more natural alternative approach then this could help. If not it best to go for prescribed HRT, its all a matter of personal choice and what works for you.

Sarah 2 I think you must make your own mind up, or maybe have a look at other forums that discuss this.

Perhaps you should do your own research into why, I just posted a PubMed report. There is masses of info on the effect on hormones applied topically for skin health. If that is what you are against.

I think you are determined to undermine whatever I  post, that your prerogative.

Have a look a this site  http://www.smartskincare.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=20

Why would anyone want to undermine what you post? Putting across another view or other information is not undermining you.  If this works for you- great, but that doesn't mean it works for everyone .

Crinone appears to be the same as Utrogestan - natural progesterone- which is available on prescription only. Its role in infertility has been known for a long time.

The 2nd link is not saying anything new- some people will keep on about how progesterone can help bone density but there is no evidence to prove this yet- see the info from the National Osteoporosis Society here

http://www.nos.org.uk/document.doc?id=1357

I don't know which 20:1 cream you are describing but personally I think it's very dangerous to use over the counter hormonal treatments containing both hormones without medical supervision- it's playing with fire. Presumably these are bought online?

My mindset is to have a 'natural' approach which is why I use bioidentical oestrogen and micronised progesterone- all made from plants.

I don't want to cause bad feeling but this is a topic about which there is debate- no need to take it personally just  because other people have different opinions.

I said it in humour, it seems to me that that there has been a lot of splitting of hairs.

I would like to point out that I did not start this thread, it was a first poster Flossie.

Perhaps she will post again. It seems strange that she has not done so as there has been two pages in reply to her questions.

I tried to answer them in a balanced fair way, knowing that there would be different opinions as there always is when I post about natural progesterone cream and that makes me wonder.

I use an estrogen patch and natural progesterone cream, I don't force this on anyone else just because it "works" for me. ( I have had a hysterectomy so I able to have a little more leeway) Its hard to know that whatever I post about NP it will be picked to pieces by certain people but I wanted to reply to Flossie's post. I hope she will post again.

The reply post were for mainly Flossie and Winterose, if you are interested Winterose about Serenity Twenty to One cream PM me for details.

Hello All,
Thank you all for your replies, I am very appreciative. I am sorry my initial post has caused some friction.
I have read them all with great interest & will mull over all the advice & information.

I've had a very bad few days, hence my silence, but I thank everyone for their input. I will post a again when I have made a decision. I may go to my GP & have a chat too.
