Thyroid medication and HRT
« on: February 19, 2014, 12:56:32 PM »

Hello I am new to this site but was just wondering if anyone could give me any advise with regard to thyroid medication and HRT.  I am taking Utrogesten 100 and Sandrena gel and also taking T4 thyroxin 100mcgs and 25mcgs of liothyronine T3.  I saw my Endocronologist yesterday and she suggested I come off HRT as it could be interfering with my thyroid.  Does anyone have any experiences of this.  I have got a large tummy now, not gluten or coeliac, but would like some answers. :'(

I have been on levothyroxine for 21 years and have been on various types of HRT since then as well. I have read about HRT and Levothyroxine interfering with each other, but have never noticed any problems.

Is it possible to get a second opinion?

Hi there, yes I have read from several sources that oestrogen can reduce binding of thyroxine.... however I am on both and haven't had any problems .....sometimes you may need to increase your thyroxine dose to offset lower T4 levels I believe .... Serum T4 levels should guide Doc as necessary :)

IMHO I think all that is necessary is to check your thyroid annually and adjust it as needed.  I've been on thyroid for decades and no way would I quit ERT or HRT.  I think that would be totally unnecessary.  I'm a registered nurse, not sure that makes any difference, but I do know a bit about hormones.
