My Consultant at the menopause clinic said a big no to applying it to my lower leg. But then I do have a varicose vein on one lower calf. The only approved sites from the pharmaceutical company who manufactures mine are outer upper arm and shoulder and inner thigh, over an area approximately a5 size.

Hello there,

After reading up on this web site and some suggestions from a number of fabulous won=men in this forum I went to my GP and asked to move to utrogestan and oestrogel.

He didn't rule it out but wasn't very keen, largely because he had never prescribed it before (in fact no one in the practice had.) He asked for a bit of time to look into it and prescribed me a higher dose of Prempack than the one O was on. (up to 1.25mg). I'm doing okay on that - it seems to have relieved the symptoms that were creeping back in, but here's my question...

Should I push to try the utro/ oestro combination and pump?

Any thoughts from those of you who have traveled this road would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks Stellajane. That's helpful.

I'm 53 but have no intention of trying life without HRT...

I'll stick with Prempac for now and revisit this when I feel the need. Onwards and upwards!

I have read through this thread ( well not the full 45 pages of it exactly ) and I have to say that I am now a little more uncertain than I was before.

I started a new HRT prescription about 12 days ago which is Estradiol 50mgs patches and Ultrogestan 100mg capsules from days 15 to 26. To say that I am a little wary of taking the capsules is quite an understatement ( any potential progesterone treatment has earnt the name paranoia patches / pills in my vocabulary as a result of my experiences.)

I struggled with Estelle Duo many months back as pills didn't seem to work for me so I'm not sure how these little monkeys will go down.  :-\ I observe that some of you seem to take them at night but that may be because you are using an "alternative route"  ;) ( I understand that they come in a pessary form for this type of application but I guess you girls know what you're doing with the tablets) :o

So apart from the potential for, nausea, hair loss, anxiety and insomnia........sounds like most of you are giving Utrogestan the thumbs up?  ???

You use them at night either route  :D

Vaginally because its easy to do once lying down

Orally its because you have to take them on empty stomach .

I am using Utrogestan 100 for 7 days and I like your description of progesterone as 'paranoia'! That's exactly how I feel after a day or so and I have to keep reminding myself that it's the tablets!

Truffle I also do a 100mg for seven days , and start to feel I am actually going bonkers. It also makes my VA/ bladder issues worse.

There is a part of me that would like a hyster so I wouldn't need it, but that is obviously rather dramatic and doesn't come without problems to its own.

I just no I have to be on HRT for life as my VA / bladder is bad, and it's the progesterone part that is the ? although very slight regards BC.

Just 7 days of it and my labia goes all thin, couple of days of stopping and they plump up again. I had no idea how much our nether regions reacted to hormones , I was obviously going around with blinkers , as this whole perimenopause VA/bladder stuff has knocked me for six both mentally and physically. 😔

stellajane whats your dosage of estrogen upped to while taking the progesterone?

Today I found myself wondering if I should just abandon the whole HRT thing and try a different approach......?

Blinkin' 'eck, your labia go thinner?I will monitor mine and see.....Luckily I have not blessed with VA so far and, having read about it on here, I would like to avoid it. How much oestrogel are you on? I have two pumps per day

My bladder is just getting worse .. Been on 1 pump gel 5weeks and also Ovestin for 1 week now.. Feel very down about it - and worried about why it is deteriorating( my urine sample was apparently negative for infections - hah can't believe I am actually sad I don't have a bacteriological something )  but getting more and more pain flare ups which ebb and flow from intolerable to bearable plus urgency plus soreness and now even wee seems to come out after I've wiped myself thinking I've finished- twice knickers had to come off. Affecting my confidence at work. That with my continuing brain fog. Miserable. Could it be my body getting used to the oestrogen
Repopulating the area( I say this hopefully )?  :-\

Callisto - I would ask to be referred to one of the specialist clinics for urological problems - you may need advice with pelvic floor exercises.  It is very important to totally empty your bladder every time - so relax the pelvic floor and tip your pelvis back and forth to allow it to empty completely.  Retaining any urine will cause it to go stale and this will make you burn.  Also bathing the area with a bicarb of soda mix and drink a teaspoon of bicarb in some water (possibly flavoured with a little bit of cordial if need be ) as this will neutralise your urine.  If you can, put your feet up midday and, when possible, go without pants to allow things to air.  I also use Multi Gyn actigel which helps to keep things healthy around the vaginal area and usually stops the burning.  Avoid caffein, acidic juice, alcohol etc and drink camomile, fennel or herbal teas and plenty of water.  If you soreness is basically to do with the Urethra - which it sounds as though it is - this is very nasty. I'm afraid I found the Ovestin made me burn - I think it's the fillers in the cream - Vagifem is slightly better for me if I use it with Multi Gyn Actigel. Dg x

YET another question. Sorry. I would value any opinions.

2 pumps oestrogel daily. Week one I take 100my Utrogestan per night for 7 nights. (Doesn't cause a bleed). End of week three I start getting marked pms symptoms......not as bad re the crying and despair as before I took her, but anxious, tired, dropping stuff, angry, sad etc. My body is clearly producing it's own progesterone around then. Do I alter when I take the Utrogestan to the end of week three so that I get all of my progesterone at once?

Thank you

Trufflecaat - I'm not sure what you have been told to take and when?  I assume you are still peri meno? The problem with the peri stage is the fluctuation of your own hormones and unfortunately Utrogestan isn't that good at controlling the cycle, particularly at such a low dose and for so few days. If you are trying to control mood this is very difficult to achieve in the peri stage and I don't think any of us should expect to feel good every day.  In my experience it is a combination of various measures to keep feeling on an even keel.  I practise a great deal of Mindful Meditation whenever I feel low, stressed or fatigued and this helps me through the tougher times.  The only thing I can't cope with are the horrible headaches I get when I'm not on HRT.
I would stick with what you have been told to do and over the next few months things may well settle as your body adjusts.  DG x
