Niahm thanks for that. What dose oestrogen do you use and are you peri?
Stellajane I think you're quite right about the potential for ladies to try out the 7 days for a scanty period without regular scans. I think I may be guilty of falling into this category. It would be unfair for me to say I'm severely intolerant; I guess I'm just intolerant, I know I felt dreadful after about 8 days of progesterone  It was very useful what you said about the 7days, 10 days and 12 days and I think I'll try to aim for the middle one.
Thanks Hurdity for that link. I had a quick read of the full document. The bit on page 9 was quite interesting when referring to micronised progesterone for progesterone opposition (don't know if this means for hrt) in that it states a dose over 12 days for the oral preparation and 25mgs twice a day as a suppository. Doesn't actually make it clear  if that way of taking it is actually the micronised version and if it is, could vaginally be the same amount??  All interesting stuff anyway and great that we have the opportunity to discuss it here on the forum x

Hello im 41 and probably peri, I saw Studd for crippling Pmt but I'm probably early peri. I use 2 pumps of ostrogel, did use 3 for a while but started to cause me problems. I definately don't get a scanty bleed it's heavy...to give you a comparison I find after 2 days of using utro orally im in a very bad way, vaginally about day 4/5 I feel pretty awful...so id say I'm on the severely intolerant side, I really couldn't cope with 10 days 7 is a struggle. Hope that helps x

Progesterone always stops me from sleeping don't know where the myth of it being a calming hormone comes from? ?

Hi Dancingirl
I just read your post regarding your experience with utrogestan.  I saw Prof Studd 2 years ago and had a lot of problems with using utrogestan.  I only had to use it for 7 days each month and found it was a real struggle.  I felt terrible with very bad stomach cramps and low mood and weird dreams. I tried it vaginally as well.  I was told I should expect a very light bleed, but I used to get a heavy bleed.  Anyway had to stop that within three months and did try to get advice from Prof Studd by phone, but he never replied.  Thought it was just me with not being able to tolerate utrogestan. I saw him after 3 months and he advised me to have a hysterectomy.

Well I'm not trying it till April so shall see what happens.  I had a heavy bleed after stopping just four days of one of my combined HRT I took so don't think it will take much.  I also have many years of homepathic usage and there are a few remedies that will kick start a bleed think I would prefer these to a hysterectomy!

I couldn't tolerate Utrogestan it gave me very vivid dreams that woke me up several times a night and made me so hot at night that felt like I had a fever. Lasted 7 nights and then abandoned it .

Meant to be having a Mirena fitted this week, but feel nervous about that and wondering if I should cancel it as I am worried in case I get side effects with that too.

Tinkerbell are you prog intolerant? I had a Mirena fitted last summer as my gp said it would help my pmt, it was horrific I lasted 48 hours and paid privately to get it taken out, I'm severely prog intolerant and struggle with utro but compared to the mirena and my pmt before its a million times better. I limp through 7 days but survive. Try the mirena but it's got a nasty synthetic prog in it, I felt mad couldn't sleep, crying the whole time. studd has recommended I consider a hysterectomy but I'm 41 with 2 small children so msybe in 5 years or so...I think if you're really prog intolerant its the only way to resolve things fully or you find an HRT regime that's bearably/better than being with no hrt if that makes sense !x

Absolutely wouldn't have a mirena fitted! Sorry especially if you have problems with progesterone

Tinkerbell - do try the Mirena.  The Mirena is recommend by many gynaes as a good option even if you struggle with oral or transdermal progesterone. The benefits of the Mirena over other forms of delivery are set out clearly on this site:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/to_progestogens.php
Niamh's and Kay50's experiences sound very scary but are very unusual and you may be pleasantly surprised how easy this option is when you take into account the benefits of using as little or as much oestrogen as you like to control all your meno symptoms.  Sadly one tends to only hear about those who have had difficulty with the Mirena but many women repeatedly have it fitted over many years with no problems.
Do expect some cramps at first and there is likely to be some bleeding and then spotting for a few weeks but usually the bleeding all stops within 3-6 months - so even if you are peri meno, any erratic or heavy bleeding will be lessened and under control.
As I mentioned before, Utro has not been ideal for me - I got vivid dreams and even woke drenched in sweat on many occasions, so whilst it is hailed as the wonder progesterone it doesn't suit everyone.
Do keep us posted about how you do with the Mirena - I believe there is a high percentage of around 80-90% of women who do very well with it. DG xxxx

I am getting really nervous about it....got a stinking cold so don't know whether to cancel.

Dancing girl.... I got the vivid dreams and terrible night sweats too.
Did you have a Mirena fitted then?

I haven't had a period for 11 months now, so will I get the bleeding with it?

Also my son's birthday on the same day as the fitting, will I feel up to go out for dinner in the evening?

I had a heavy bleed post 12 days of Utro this mth, with quite a few clots, heavy for about 3 days and then tapered off for another 2 or so.
