Yep.  If you use the search button you wll find that many of us suffer.  I don't use the word lightly either because panic attacks for me left me housebound.

I take a beta-blocka at night and use Rescue Remedy as a back up.

Yep me too.

Scariest thing but it does help to know you are not alone.

Are you on any medication and have you spoken to your GP. I am on Beta blockers and the occasional diazepam.

Hi lynneh, think I can probably count on one hand the number of women I know that HAVEN'T had anxiety going through menopause, and they must have skin like a rhino! It's horrible, you don't even have to be thinking or worrying about anything in particular, it just "swoops" in, feels like you have dropped down in a rollercoaster, and I find mine is quite often followed by a hot flush! I also get a tight throat, heart palpitations, and the anxiety will often "zing" straight into the bowel, making it feel loose as though something terrible has happened! It's not all the time, but once I understood the weirdness from the ladies on this site, it did help.

Hugs from afar!

Hi Lynneh,

I posted on this forum as having crushing anxiety and at the time was housebound and very very scared. I was referred to a meno clinic and was put on Evorel patches and had a Mirena coil inserted.
I felt better after about 3 weeks but still had occasional blips (panic attacks).

However 4 months down the line I feel much better and have not had anymore panic attacks, I still get butterflies in my stomach at certain times of the month but do feel so much better. I can function normally again.

I appreciate that Hrt is maybe not suitable for everyone and that it possibly is only delaying the inevitable, but, at this point in my life it is allowing me to carry on and I have felt better than I have done in years.

Hi lynnh

Yep another sufferer here,  its par for the course more or less. I found it very frightening and debilitating, practically stuck in the house for quite a while. My gp prescribed an antidepressant for the anxiety which helped a lot but took a little while to get back to normal along with hrt. Have you thought of trying either of these? My ad is mirtazapine, i take 30mg every night, its been a life saver.

Theres plenty of info here and lots of fellow sufferers who will listen and help where they can.

Hope this helps, take care.

Hi lynnh

If your anxiety has only come on due to the menopause and there is no medical reason for you not to try HRT - then this is the recommended treatment not anti-depressants or other drugs.

This is what Dr Currie says on her Facebook page Menopause Matters:
Antidepressants are not recommended for first-line treatment of menopausal symptoms such as flushes and low moods, yet are often offered by some GPs. Some antidepressants can be used if HRT is unable to be taken for medical reasons, but only after full discussion and after ruling out the use of HRT

Hopefully you will be seen by an informed doctor but if there is no-one in your practice who is well up on it then I suggest you get as much info as you can from this site (menu on left ) and ask us anything you like and we will try to help - so that you can tell the doc what you would like to try!

Hi there - I have terrible anxiety and panic attacks that I just can't get to grips with.  I honestly cannot remember the last time I felt well/'normal'.  Every day is a battle and I just seem to have no control over it.  No two days are ever the same and it has such a rotten effect on my life as I often feel that I am only safe at home.  I have battles with shops, restaurants, anywhere that isn't home basically - and despite being on beta blockers for more years than I can remember, this time the symptoms seem to have returned with a vengeance.  I hate it....................:-(

Me too - I've been taking 15mg of the AD Mirtazapine at night for 5 weeks now and I can honestly say they have been a lifesaver for me.

I didn't want to go anywhere just stay in my safe house, but now I'm 'me' again :)

I feel these ADs worked pretty quick for me :)

I've tried pretty much everything for my anxiety including betas and HRT but the doc today has finally put me on SSRIs - Sertraline - just taken a half tablet to date but I'll let you know whether they work for me once some time has passed.  ::)
