Further analysis of HRT and heart disease

8 January 2008

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) have analysed 23 trials which have looked at the effect of HRT on heart disease in women of different age groups. Their analysis confirms that young women in early menopause taking HRT not only have no increased risk of heart disease, but may in fact have a reduced risk. They conclude that HRT is very safe for women under 60 or who have recently experienced the menopause.

Publication of the WHI trial in 2002 led to concern about HRT increasing the risk of heart disease but it was later found that this risk only applied to much older women than would normally take HRT for control of their menopausal symptoms. This further analysis of a number of trials reassures us about the safety of HRT in the early postmenopausal years.
