HRT and breast cancer

30 July 2007

An important statement from the International Menopause Society explores the link between HRT, mammography and breast cancer and concludes that in women younger than 60, HRT is safe.

Long term use may be associated with a small increased risk of about 1 extra case per 1,000 women per year.

In the younger postmenopausal women, weighing benefits and risks, favours use of HRT for symptomatic women.

A Press Statement can be found on the IMS website, www.imsociety.org
