Acid reflux
« on: November 07, 2024, 03:35:41 PM »

Since taking HRT (patch) I have experienced horrible acid reflux. I have suffered  with it mildly over the years but nothing too concerning. The last couple of months I have a burning throat, sore runny nose, belching and headaches. The usual meds like gaviscon aren’t doing much and I don’t want to take PPIs. Is this a usual menopause/HRT symptom? I barely drink alcohol and mostly have a good diet.

It can be a symptom but changes like this should really be investigated. I had a change in reflux and also the burning throat which, for me, meant that my throat was ulcerated due to the reflux. I was referred for endoscopy to rule out any cancerous changes and I was then advised to take a PPI. Like you I was reluctant but having had a close friend develop oesophageal cancer after a diagnosis of Barrett's disease and their refusal to take a PPI I did start to take them. Not ideal but it's worth getting this checked out.

I have worked out that for me and my close friends, oestrogen (transdermal, oral and own when spiking) causes more gastric acid production. Progesterone cream does the opposite and can even cause too low acid but is very protective for my stomach.

I think it’s why O makes me so nauseous. Some friends who started O cannot now tolerate white wine which they could previously but are ok with red.

Just thought our experiences may align with this.

Progestogens aggravate reflux for me, for example within birth control, however I have been prone to it all my life.

I have taken omeprazole since my 20's and it's been a godsend. In my opinion it is one of the medications with the best benefits to risk ratio out there.

What is it you're afraid of about taking a PPI?

Morning.  As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains as well as hiatus hernia.  Over the years Milk of Magnesia liquid or Rennies eased symptoms at night, then I developed an irritating clearing of throat cough.  My GP prescribes Omeprazolol which I take every morning.

Works for me.  Quality of Life is important.  MayB try it for 10 days and see how you feel?
