Pain and soreness - labia. Please help
« on: November 01, 2024, 10:59:39 AM »

I've been on HRT for 2 yrs now (peri and 47 years old). Trying to work out if the issues I'm having are because it's failing, oestrogen level has changed, I've become sensitive to something or it's another issue.

I'm on oestrogel (2.5 pumps), Utrogestan orally (12 days a month 200mcg) and Vagifem 4 times a week.

This regime plus almost daily Yes WB has kept my vaginal atrophy under control.

But for the past two weeks I've experienced signifcant soreness almost to the extent of pain in my labia and itching.

I tried increasing Oestrogel to 3 pumps for extra estrogen (as I have been having other symptoms anyway) and using Yes daily along with a bit of Blissel topically. Sometimes these things help, sometimes they don't.

It actually went away when I had my period (presumably due to moisture) so I don't think this is thrush but now my period has gone, the pain was bad enough to have a paracetamol during the night. Itching still really bad.

GP will only give me a telephone call this afternoon. Not sure what that will achieve.

Any thoughts on what is going on? I do get other skin allergies now so wondering if I've become extra sensitive to something but the fact it was fine during my period suggests not.

Get the 'vagifem' up there every night, for ever if necessary.  U may find that adding 'yes' or 'estriiol' on the labia/vulva regions will ease symptoms.  Unlikely to be thrush although I did have itching high up after each period which went after 24 hours with no discharge.

Put a 'vagifem' up there now and again this evening, then every night 4 at least 2 weeks.  Let us know how you get on.

Thank you. My challenge wirh Vagifem is that it seems to help with higher up (no issues there and when I feel pain during sex it's not there) but it doesn't seem to help the labia area and outer area.

I do sometimes use it half way up but it doesn't seem to do much. It's why I've been trying Blissell gel in the meantime.

I have also tried Ovestin there but it seemed to make things worse, I've heard the other ingredients sometimes do this?

You're on the right track by experimenting.  I use KY Jelly when my labia itches ....... some products can certainly aggravate !

Hello Kai, it might just be a time thing. I've found that nightly pessaries and cream twice a day is only just now helping my VA after 6 months. The external itch and soreness is less than it was. So I would think if you can get prescribed it daily ( I will stay on this dose permanently due to length of time until I was diagnosed with VA) and persevere,  it should eventually improve everywhere. I use coconut oil as a moisturiser and reapply each time I go to the loo. I've found as long as I apply that throughout the day, I'm pretty comfy.

Sometimes just a bit of Blissel won't cut it, its one of the milder oestrogens. Use it more often, perhaps three times a day. It is a time issue, it took me a year to be symptom free on daily Vagifem, Estriol cream and a moisturiser.  With flare ups, which can happen along the way, use more of the treatment, its the only way to combat this disgusting, debilitating condition called Vaginal Atrophy (GSM).

Thank you. I figured after almost 2 years on it that things would be settled but instead they are getting worse. I didn't realise flare ups happened but makes sense if natural estrogen is all over the place.

Also didn't know Blissel was one of the milder ones. Will keep experimenting.

I'm glad to hear that you're all doing much better with the right regimes.

Don't despair. Simply keep up with the treatment until symptoms ease; then continue with that regime ;-)

Thank you. Really appreciate the help.

Did see the GP but she just gave me thrush meds. I'm still fairly sure it's atrophy so will crack on with that and push for more meds in the coming weeks.
