Hello everyone
« on: April 12, 2016, 05:18:58 PM »

Hello new here and would like to say hi.
I'm going through the perimenopause and having horrendous mood swings and anxiety. How can I feel so low wanting to kill myself then be normal ish for a week then back to being low :/
Then there are the hot flushes. Feel like my insides are an inferno.
Finally went to docs who wouldn't put me on Hrt as my mum had breast cancer so stuck me on antidepressants instead (which I really didn't want after spending years on them for post natal depression)
Would it be really bad for me if I insisted on Hrt. I'm 45. Thanks for listening x

Hello sls70 and welcome to the forum.

I am not one of the expert ladies who can advise on HRT but I did want to say that your symptoms sound pretty standard for peri menopause unfortunately!

I'm sure you'll find the forum helpful and supportive as you make your way through this journey.

Take care and keep posting.

:welcomemm: have a browse round.  Make notes.

Ladies can use HRT to help with hot flushes, some anti-depressant medication can ease low mood, as oestrogen levels drop off the muscles become lax so we can ache all over  ::) and then there's the dryness - particularly around eyes, ears and vagina.

Keeping a journal about moods and diet can be helpful.  Gentle exercise is important. Learning to say 'no' more so ;-).

However, your GP is 'wrong' in that you can have HRT.  It really does depend on whether the cancer was oestrogen dominant, even so, quality of Life is important: after all, the proverbial bus might be along in the morning.  Recent guidelines suggest that GPs should not prescribe ADs as the first line of treatment.   I had breast disease and was told not to have HRT in the future and so far I've not required it apart from treatment for vaginal atrophy.  But I would have pushed for HRT had I suffered as some ladies do.

Let the ADs do their work, if they help it will give you a break from the moods.

Greetings! I am 66, I have lost my vaginal elasticity and have joined this forum in the hope that someone may have a solution I haven't already tried. Penetration is very painful, likewise the first few minutes: but the pain eases off after that. This problem has become marked in the past five years or so. (It didn't start with the menopause. My actual change was pretty undramatic.) I have tried Vagifem, following the regime as prescribed, and it is spectacularly ineffective. This is not a lubrication problem. I consider my diet to be fairly righteous. I can't use HRT because of family history. Any advice would be very gratefully received!

:welcomemm: to you too!  Do you want to use HRT? who has suggested that it won't be suitable for you?

Has anyone recommended a dilator to use daily plus a good lubricant? to keep the vagina open - i.e. use it or lose it  :-\

sls70, welcome to MM!

I would check that out.  I'm not sure but I think it would depend on what type of breast cancer you mother had.  This is not a straightforward case so I would suggest to get a second opinion from a hormone/menopause expert like Professor Studd.

Sorry about you mum's breast cancer and also about the difficult time you are having.  I hope you can get some good advice from an specialist in this area.
