Buy your pumpkins, they keep for months in a cool place. When cut in half they keep, 'fruit' side down on a plate, for weeks. Ours didn't grow as well this year we have had 3 - 2 eaten 1 left on the vine to turn orange.
There are many different shapes too. Chickens will peck at the skins if they aren't roasted enough to eat yourself.
