I have just been diagnosed with a macular hole in my left eye.  I went to my routine eye test at the beginning of last month and everything was fine. But a few days later I noticed a blurring and distortion in my left eye. After having a thorough eye test at the opticians were there did quite a few scans too, I was told that I have a very tiny macular hole, at the moment only the size if a pin ****. The optician told me with it only been very tiny at this stage it could heal itself. However she has refered me to the hospital.

Has anyone else had this? And did anyone's heal themselves?

My hubby has posterior vitreous detachment causing blurred vision. It may heal itself or may need surgery.  He is awaiting a further appointment for more scans.
He noticed blurry vision himself, optician wasn't sure and sent him to eye clinic. He got seen within a few days.

There is information about macular holes on the RNIB website Paranoid http://www.rnib.org.uk/eyehealth/eyeconditions/eyeconditionsdn/Pages/macular_hole.aspx  It doesn't sound as if it will heal itself.  Maybe you could get some advice from them while waiting for your hospital appointment. Let us know how you get on.

Thank you taz for that information, I found it very informative. Still waiting for my appointment. So fed up though with this blurring and distortion I have in my left eye. I will let you no how I get on.
Cubagirl, how has your husband gone on, has he had his appointment yet, are they not sure then if his blurring is due to PDT or if its a macular hole?

Still waiting for next appointment. He's going to contact them if he hasn't heard by end of next week. Think they are pretty sure it's PDT. Son's girlfriend has tears in her retina, but they've healed since she stopped wearing her contact lens so often. Only wears on a night out now.
Hubby's eye is driving him bonkers though as he has to do a lot of reading in his job causing pain in his eye and headaches as a result.

Thanks for your reply cubagirl, I can really sympathise with your husband, it's driving me mad too this blurring and distortion I am getting in my right eye it too courses me to have headaches. How long did it take your sons girlfriends tears in her retina take to heal?

Several months. Initially she had to use drops every hour so had to set alarm during the night. Did that for about 3/4 days. Was forbidden fro using contact lens for 6 weeks. She started using again after that time but within a few weeks back to square one, hence keeping it down to minimum usage.
Sorry you confused me, thought it was your left eye, or is it both you have problems with?

Cubagirl I did say I had problems with my left eye, but no I meant to say my right eye I just have problems with.

I bet that was very difficult for your sons girlfriend to have had to wake up every hour to apply the drops to her eye. I am surprised they just didn't treat the tears with laser surgery. But at least the tears did heal.

Just noticed this post. My Mum had macular hole in her left eye about 4 years ago. She was referred straight away for an operation to "fill" it as she was advised it is best not to leave it too long . so please so not ignore it despite what your optician might say.  she had the op under local anaesthetic ( brave woman) which lasted about half an hour. She had to do something called posturing for 5 days afterwards (though this varies from specialist to specialist I believe) which is to keep the filler ( air bubble) in place. This was not easy but was very successful.  Now 4 years on the hole has completely disappeared and her sight is very good. Can I suggest that you speak to someone at the Macular Society (www.macularsociety.org)  I rang them when my Mum was diagnosed and they were VERY helpful and even put my Mum in touch with a lady who lived near her who had the same operation so that they could have a chat about it. she found this very reassuring.  It's not an easy operation but as I understand the results as usually pretty good

Thank you so much Annieb for that helpful information you gave me :thankyou:not been on the forum for a while so was pleased to see your reply today. I have been in touch with the macular society and they were very helpful and posted me lots of information as well has giving me some contact numbers of people who have had the operation for a macular hole. It was very encouraging to hear your mums appointment was successful.
