Stop classifying music - it's what I did for years and soooo missed out on other types 'cos I was raised on the 'classics'  ::) ... thought I do find Wagner very heavy  ;)

I wouldn't call it "classifying" exactly - I have tried for a lot of years to like opera but because I need to understand lyrics then opera and classical music sort of defeats me.

At the moment I love new stuff - hate to hark back to the days of my youth as that just makes me feel sad that those times have gone.

Oh I don't feel sad about my past but music can move me to tears  ::) and when I hear certain pieces/songs when driving, I have to pull over ......

You need to see opera live to get the real effect - a good production, in English, with clear words. There's nothing more exhilarating or moving - honest!!  :)

I couldn't see the point in ballet until I saw it live... it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.. awe inspiring.

Hubby & I went to see modern ballet, as in Ballet Rambert, many years ago.  Brilliant!  Not been since.

I saw Copallea [sp] when I was about 11 ....... at Norwich I think.  I saw Hansel and Gretel in Norwich and understood one word  ::) and La Boheme in Northampton in recent years.

I don't understand 'rap' though, too fast for me  :D

One way is to go to one in the original foreign language but where they have sub-titles. Or try the Britten operas - dramatic and quite draining emotionally. Peter Grimes is a must for anyone who loves the Suffolk coast.

I love the Suffolk coast having been brought up in Suffolk but still don't like Benjamin Britten's work. However here is a bit of Peter Grimes for those of you who do.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-juIqZGKdZA

As for being sad about the past - maybe it depends on how your life has worked out. If you can look back on the past and the hopes and dreams you had then and at least some of them materialised then music from that time can make you feel happily nostalgic. If, on the other hand, the hopes and dreams you had when these songs were "hip" didn't work out then they can make you long for the happy days gone by. Bit deep  ;D

It's the Four Sea Interludes which really make me think of walking on the beach at Aldeburgh - here's one of them.

What about Debussy or Handel's Water music, they are very relaxing to listen to- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfSV_k3MhCw&feature=related

or for light opera Pucinni -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr5vpHtJIlg

I have always wanted to go to the Ballet, its on my "List"

Thank you  :thankyou:

I have worked out that I am no good at relaxing - too slow - too dreamy for me. Maybe just at the minute I need busy music.

Oh I didn't need music earlier, had the TV on low in the background and dropped off for exactly an hour!  Someone posted Renaissance on another web earlier so that is going round my head but can't remember the name of the song .....  ::)

I have a few classical CD's and they are the relaxing type.  I call them 'mind music' as they calm brain waves and your mind.
