Newbie needing a hand hold
« on: January 10, 2026, 06:54:17 AM »

Morning everyone. Thanks for accepting me. I have just been diagnosed with an ovarian cyst. I'm 54 with a postmeno bleed after a 13 month cessation of periods. I've had the two ultrasounds and had to have the biopsy on Wednesday after results of transvaginal ultrasound. Lining measurement is 4mm, which I thought was normal but told I'm borderline. I have blood test on Monday. They seem to suspect it's a hormonal cyst but needed to release on here x

Of course U need to chat,  :welcomemm:

There seems 2 B a disparity between what is considered 'normal' in scan results and 4mm - I wouldn't worry too much.

What has been suggested as a follow up?

How do U feel overall?  Even when my periods had stopped I would get pre-menstrual symptoms and think 'Oh No not after all this time' as ovaries continue to pump out small amounts of hormone.  Which may aggravate cysts, fibroids etc.

I expect that some1 with a bit of knowledge will be along.

Did it feel like a period? Although the NHS defines 1 year without a bleed as meno there are people who go longer than this and then bleed again, once or several times.

This is extremely likely to just be a benign functional cyst following a last ovulation.

The 12 months cut off for considering bleeding "postmenopausal" is completely arbitrary, historically defined by a committee of gynaecologists who would probably have been all or mostly male given the era.

They could quite easily have settled on 10 months, or 18 months for example.

A 4mm endometrium is also not concerning especially in someone with evidence of recent ovulation and I personally would have simply elected to monitor this with another scan in 3-6 months, however if you are worried the biopsy should give you peace of mind.

It is a good idea to get a CA-125 blood test as well, however it really doesn't sound like anything sinister from what you have described.

I would also take this as an opportunity to think about your overall health going forward and whether you want to replace the ovarian hormones that your body is no longer reliably producing.

Thanks everyone for replying. The bleeding felt exactly like a period, lasting 4 days. I suppose I'm thrown now ive been told I have a cyst as I have no symptons and it was only discovered after the bleed. Had my blood test this morning so hopefully I will know more within another week. I'm then hoping a plan can be put in place, moving forward.
