ongoing digestive/bowel issues
« on: December 18, 2025, 05:06:31 PM »

Hi

I haven't posted for a while but since April (ish) I have been plagued with daily digestive and bowel issues.  I was diagnosed back then with campylobacter through a stool sample.  My insides have been absolutely problematic since then.  Just wondering if anyone else has suffered any of this and can throw some light onto the situation.  I'm at my wits end and totally exhausted trying to find out what the issue it.  I have diagnosed myself with allsorts.  All my bloods and stools came back normal after that and my doctor prescribed me a low dose of Amitriptyline.  I took that but found it made me really drowsy for a couple of hours the next morning and as I look after my grandchild a couple of days, this wasn't suitable.  I started a probiotic which I thought was helping but I think that may have just been a placebo effect but unsure.  Anyway, my pain continues.  The main pain seems to be stemming from just above my hipbone (almost in line with belly button) on the right side. Sometimes like a stitch and sometimes just a dull ache, but I'm aware of it 24/7.  Feels like something twisting.  My stomach becomes very bloated, even down to the pelvic area and I feel pressure and pain in my bladder. Tender to the touch. Inside of my thighs sting and burnat times when the bladder irritates. I feel really inflamed and if I distend my stomach its like my insides are full of razor blades.  The muscles become sore with the bloating.  I also get lower back pain at times.  I have constant rumblings and also heartburn and very very very bad belching!!  Not so much gas seems to get out the other end! I also had a scan with regards bladder and bowel and all was clear.  I used to have diarrhoea most mornings but now that has changed to more of a constipated vibe!  Although a couple of days last week I thought I needed to pass wind and it was an explosion of water and mucous (TMI I know!!)  So I have in the past couple of weeks been back to surgery and had more stool samples and bloods done.  I almost wanted them to find something and I thought perhaps celiac.  But I have been today and all my tests are clear.  I was to get another scan but she has just phoned to say, due to the clearness of the last one and nothing showing up, this is unnecessary.  I am at a total loss.  It sounds strange, but I really wanted to be told there had been something found.  Anyhoo, that's my ramblings and just wondered if anyone else has been unfortunate enough to suffer anything similar.
Thanks for reading if you have had enough spare time!!

A lot of what you describe sounds like nerve pain which may be why the doc gave you amitriptyline. Irritated nerves tighten muscles.
I had a lot of tests in the summer after stinging pains on the right hand side by rib cage & mushy poo for months but nothing came back with tests & ct scans.
I’ve now put it down to stress & I’m trying different foodstuffs or eliminating some but am considering going to see an acupuncturist as the right type can tell where muscle tension is etc and maybe the cause ?
Would this be an option for you and a different approach?
One acupuncturist I saw years ago took a whole body holistic approach.

What a time you're having. I suppose it's reassuring that your tests are normal. But obviously not solving the problem. I've had digestive issues for decades and had lots of tests. , I seem to get new types of pain too.  Have you had a CT scan and colonoscopy or was it an US scan? My GP was going to give me amitriptyline or a mild anxiety medication because he said they treat IBS like that

Thanks for replying ladies.   Yes, I assume the Amitryptiline was for what they think is IBS.  I have diverticulitis, or so Ive been told (found by a scan but never had a colonoscopy).  Wont give a colonoscopy when there is no blood present in stool.  But its usually my left side that's affected and with my IBS too. The acupuncture sounds a good call but I hate needles!!  This pain just seems so different and I wonder if the campylobacter has invited my left side to join the party!!  Its exhausting anyway.  I was prescribed noritriptyline today as an alternative as it seemingly doesn't cause as many side effects.  I did say today, however, that I'd rather get to the bottom of what is causing the problem rather than just mask it.

Have you had gall bladder removal Holidaylover ?

I'm wondering if my gall bladder removal 25 years ago my aging body is not coping so well with bile just running through as it's not stored.
