PMDD when reach Menopause without HRT
« on: December 10, 2025, 06:34:20 PM »

Hello!

I love this forum and over the years have found it so comforting. I wanted to flag something  - I was on HRT since I was about 48 and I recently stopped it completely and felt so much better. I have a history of PMDD and I think this is not discussed enough as so many people want us to be on HRT - it makes sense that if you have an extreme sensitivity to hormones then HRT would be challenging. I felt calmer and slept better since I stopped this June. My migraines however are just as bad and triggered by alcohol and the symptoms of the migraine are brutal - 4 or 5 days needing to sleep, feeling sick and feeling sick with anxiety. I have not had a period since June this year when I came off it and am now 54 so I think I am through 'it' however after the recent migraine a few days ago my PMDD symptoms rushed back and I felt out of control had burning hot feeling at night and just wanted to go away to. a scottish cottage somewhere for ages ON MY OWN!

Anyway, even though this is a horrible thing, I still feel better off the HRT because I think I am not properly cycling anymore but I still get that dire stressful, tensions in my ovaries if anyone knows what I mean - which feels a bit like constantly drowning and doesn't ease. It does go eventually though and I think it is slowly three steps forward one back sort of! I wondered if anyone had any experience of how their PMDD/PMS was after they had stopped having periods?

Love to you all having hormones out there,
Herbie's Mummy

If our hormones become balanced with less dips then replacement may no longer be necessary.  But unless we stop using it, we can't know.

1 should be 12-14 months bleed free to consider that we have reached menopause = literally the last period.  Mother Nature may throw in more bleeds, my periods waxed and waned for a few years B4 disappearing.  I didn't stop carrying protection for 5 years  ;D.  If your ovaries are pumping out oestrogen U may well have a return of flushes.

There is relatively new medication to treat migraines so discussing with your GP is important.

How is your diet overall as I was advised to eat every 3 hours, 24/7 to ease any sudden dips that can cause anxiety etc..  I've had to alter mine in the last 5 years to cut out shop bought cakes etc..

Any condition that is aggravated by having a menstrual cycle has the potential to improve with stable hormone levels.

Whether a stable estrogen replete state or a stable hypoestrogenic state is preferred is down to the individual.

Unfortunately many women are prescribed cyclical HRT which in the words of the late professor Studd is a pharmacological model of PMDD.

Progesterone intolerance is also a major contributor to PMDD as sufferers typically feel great prior to ovulation and rubbish in their luteal phase.

This can usually be gotten around with either a progestin or tibolone.
