Well I have been prescribed Solifenacin for an overactive bladder. Just thought I would update....

As I said before I would strongly recommend being well informed about the anticholinergic burden of solifenacin so that you can decide whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

It is in the highest category in terms of anticholinergic burden, and this is often not spelled out to patients at the time of prescribing.

Whilst I accept that there probably is a limited role for this class of medication in some patients, it is a double tragedy when it is prescribed to women whose underlying pathology is hypoestrogenism.

You mentioned in your other thread that you are starting to feel an approvement in your symptoms since starting on the Estradiol pessaries.  Personally I would give the pessaries more time to work before starting on what seems to me quite a strong medication. I would also ask for Estriol cream to smear on the outside area as an extra help.

I'm not a medic but I would try the topical oestrogen route first before taking a stronger medication. A conversation you need with your GP.

Hi Ayesha. It would only be like a 5mg dose. I am going to see doctor for advice on 23rd December thats my day off. Thanks for the advice I will defo ask about the cream also.

Also Bombsh3ll I have looked it up and the anticholinergic burden is more worrying for pensioners and risk of dementia in Solifenacin ?

It's detrimental at any age but older age is usually when dementia becomes symptomatic.

The actual neuropathology begins decades earlier, with midlife being a critical time for protecting our brain health

As with any medication the risk vs benefit equation is very individual, but if it were me personally I would rather wear incontinence underwear than take anticholinergic medication.

Also you have to think about how long you would be taking it for, where is the off ramp? OAB medication isn't like a course of antibiotics, if it does help over and above placebo, any benefit is lost if you stop taking it so it is something people often find themselves taking over many years.

Bonbsh3ll you sound very informed. Are you in the medical field ? I hear what you are saying, I am going to discuss with the doctor. I suppose I have to weigh up the symptoms and if I feel I need them. Atm it does feel better since it began 3 months ago so I have come this far just on estradiol, I've never had to take such medications before long term for anything. This is all new to me. I will peesavere until January 7th regardless that will be 3 months on my estradiol. Won't take anything before then anyway regardless of what the doctor says. They prescribed me Solifenacin for an OAB whrn I do not get urgency or anything lol. I did tell them im just uncomfortable after urination like stinging sensation I don't know. Maybe it helps that too. That's the main thing I want to discuss with doctor because my symptoms ain't that of an OAB. I do wee more at night but I have no problem holding my urine for any amount of time. That's why I am slightly confused but im thinking the surgeon knows best. Lol...
